The project is an educational center that works through integration and inclusion serving students with different forms of learning disabilities caused by neurological, sensory, or emotional disorders. In addition, in providing the necessary content for their educational development, we will provide them with the necessary therapeutic attention. To receive every child that knocks on their doors, without leaving anyone outside, regardless of their age, economic capacity, religion, or place of residence. The aim is to change the future of Guatemalan children with learning disabilities by providing different forms of learning to meet their unique needs by creating a nurturing environment of love, learning and mutual respect. The goal is to help each child to reach their full potential and to lead joy-filled, productive lives.
Special needs teaching assistants help children with a wide range of learning, physical or behavioral difficulties like:
• Attention deficit
• Convulsive episodes
• Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia
• Dyslexia
• Hyperactivity
• Hearing difficulties
• Infant depression
• Significant problems with their conduct
Tasks:
As a specialized volunteer:
To be special needs teaching assistant, you are required to have profound knowledge, i.e.: certifications, study programs or working experience in the following fields:
• Pedagogy
• Psychology
• Librarianship
• Art and music
• Various specialties (speech and physical) therapists
• Other experts in areas of education, disabilities and psychology
Work as a non-specialized volunteer:
If you don’t have a specialty in the above-mentioned requirements you are also welcome to participate in providing other activities with the kids at school such as:
• Creative activities (art and music classes)
• Activities to stimulate the fine and coarse motor functions (i.e. to do handicrafts or gymnastic classes)
• Environment care workshops (i.e. planting plants in the school area)
• Individual support for children who still can’t read and write
• Help in the interactive library (i.e. lending or reading books to the kids)
• Support in finding godparents or fundraising activities
Accommodation, Benefits and Costs:
• You can stay in a host family in the city of Antigua (from 85 US$/week incl. 3 meals a day), in a hostel (20 US$ single room / night, 30 US$ double room/night) or in a shared room (on request)
• Proyecto Mosaico books your lodging, Spanish school and your transportation from the airport, furthermore we offer individual assistance provided by the office in Granada before, throughout and after your stay
• For our work and our services we ask a one-time-only fee of 250€ – regardless of the length of your stay
Requirements:
• Minimum stay: 2 months as a specialized volunteer and 1 week as a non-specialized volunteer
• Spanish level: Intermediate or advanced
• You like to work and spend time with children
• You are creative and can work independently
• You are flexible and patient
• You like to read and are interested in arts and crafts
• Experiences in tutoring or working with children are helpful (but are not required)
