CHILE / English Opens Doors Program

The English Opens Doors Program, of the Chilean Ministry of Education and supported by the United Nations Development Program, aims to increase the English proficiency of Chilean students and teachers of English as an indispensable skill to aid in Chile’s continued development in our globalizing world.

An exciting and important part of this initiative is to bring native and near-native English speakers, between the ages of 21 and 35 years, into Chilean public and subsidized schools to develop the listening and speaking skills of young Chileans as well as to encourage cultural exchange.

Volunteers have a minimum commitment of 35 hours per week. They spend 24 hours a week in the classroom, and another 11 hours each week leading extracurricular activities and lesson planning. Volunteers also have the opportunity to participate in English Camps, Debates, Public Speaking and Spelling Bee competitions, and other initiatives of the English Opens Doors Program.

It is important to note that there is NO FEE for participation, and that temporary residence visa fees are waived for EODP volunteers. In addition, volunteers receive:

• TEFL training specific to the volunteer context during a week-long orientation (food and accommodations provided).
• Online Spanish course.
• A volunteer allowance of CLP 70,000 per 30 days of service
• Accommodations and meals with a host family.
• Health insurance (in-country).
• Pre-departure information and support.
• Airport transfer to accommodations upon arrival
• Assistance registering the visa and obtaining a Chilean I.D. card.
• Round-trip transportation from Santiago to the regional placement site.
• In-country support from the National Volunteer Center as well as the Regional English Representative.
• Year-long volunteers receive a week of paid vacation, in addition to regular holidays.
