The Eilean Bàn Trust, based at Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye, is a small independent charity dedicated to maintaining and managing Eilean Bàn, the island under the Skye Bridge where the author Gavin Maxwell lived.
We are looking for volunteers from Easter to October 2015 to work for a minimum period of 2 months.
Volunteers will assist in the running of the Brightwater Visitor Centre in Kyleakin and carry out maintenance tasks on the island . An interest in wildlife (particularly otters) is desirable.
Brightwater Visitor Centre, Kyleakin. This comprises a small shop and exhibition about the natural, social and cultural history of the area. Duties here will include greeting visitors and providing information about the Trust, Gavin Maxwell and Eilean Bàn, taking bookings for island tours, general upkeep of the centre (retail activities), using cash register, cleaning, maintaining displays.
The volunteers will generally be working Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday (9.45am to 4.15pm) each week in the Centre.)
Eilean Bàn – one day per week you will be asked to carry out general maintenance and gardening duties (sweeping, weeding, pruning etc). You may also be asked to cover island tours on an as-and-when basis and any reasonable duties as discussed with the Trustees.
Where: Kyleakin, Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands.
Accommodation: Lodging for the term of volunteer work will be in the warden’s room of the cottage on Eilean Bàn with cooking and laundry on site for your use. A contribution of £30 per week will be paid towards food costs.. Although Eilean Bàn is officially an island, there is easy access from the Skye Bridge. There is no internet on Eilean Bàn but there is a good mobile phone coverage, internet is available at the Brightwater Centre and wifi is easily accessible within Kyleakin.
