Scary Work In The UK This Halloween

Equal opportunities legislation outlawing discrimination against women, ethnic minorities and the disabled has yet to be extended to the undead. This combined with the undermining of disability benefit claims by courtroom film evidence showing zombies running has led to increasing poverty in the supernatural class.

Fortunately, the Halloween holiday provides zombies, ghouls, ghosts, monsters and vampires with a few weeks of legitimate employment and a chance to vary an otherwise all brains or blood diet.

Attractions all over the UK take on short term seasonal staff for a couple of weeks leading up to October 31.

In West Sussex, failed attempts by an unconventional farmer to sell a field of pumpkins ultimately led to haunted hayrides and the Field of Screams. This year they plan to make the scares bigger and better and will soon be looking to employ staff and actors for the coming season. In York, the Halloween Maze looks for happy, confident, outgoing staff for their seasonal events.

Alton Towers, in Staffordshire, is one of the UK’s largest attractions. Contracts are offered from around the first week of October to the 31st to those who can deliver terrifying but fun moments as part of their Scarefest.

Halloween opportunities also exist at Thorpe Park, where Fright Night scare actors can earn £70 per day, and Chessington World of Adventures. Both attractions are part of the same Merlin Entertainments group that owns Alton Towers and Madame Tussauds. Longer term roles are often available at the London Dungeon.

Since the horrors of Brexit, permission to work in the UK will be a problem for more of our readers, so to still have a devilish time consider volunteer work. Though this is illegal now too so sew your mouth shut when passing through immigration. Every year Scaresville, a haunted village, mysteriously appears on the grounds of Kentwell Hall, a 500 year old Tudor building in Suffolk.

Volunteer scarers are needed to dress up in ghoulish costumes, hide around corners and jump out and frighten people. Scarers should be available for at least three days, plus one training day beforehand at the Scare Academy.
