We have a lot more NGOs and grassroots organisations, particularly concerning schools and community projects, to investigate and add here soon. LGBTQ volunteers should consider that while anti same sex laws are on the law books of many African countries, and elsewhere around the world, at the time of writing Uganda is seeking to pass laws criminalizing identifying as LGBTQ and introducing the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.”

ACO-Africa

Abaana Community Outreach Africa (ACO-Africa) is an international non profit committed to providing support for the most vulnerable groups in society, placing an emphasis on education, health, psychosocial issues, economic empowerment, and nutrition, human and environmental rights. Community Development volunteers will work with orphans, elderly caretakers, HIV positive children, women and other vulnerable groups. Volunteers will conduct home and school based visits to meet the practical as well as psychosocial needs of their target groups. A second project will provide prisoners with counselling sessions on topics ranging from human rights, legal education, basic life skills and life in and after prison.
Where: Kampala, Mityana and Masaka Districts of Uganda.
Accommodation & Costs: There are options which include free accommodation and food and others that require a monthly contribution. Contact them for more information. Last information we had they stated shared accommodation and meals were available for US$120 per week.
Other Opportunities to Volunteer in Uganda
While Uganda Lodge, a guest house in southwest Uganda doesn’t seem to accept volunteers to help out around the place in exchange for accommodation, they do have guests staying there that are volunteering nearby. They charge a flat admin fee of £50, plus £140 per week for full board consisting of three meals. The profits made here from guests, including you, are used to enhance the living conditions of villagers in the local community,
