Grassroots Volunteering in Finland
The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:
Hetta Huskies
www.hettahuskies.com
Hetta Huskies offers both short and multi day safaris from their farm base, 300km inside the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. The short term shovel work they used to offer to overseas volunteers now goes to local kids. Instead, a three month husky guide internship aims to have participants feel like they leave as competent dog handlers, if not as experienced sleddog guides.
They also have a farm hand role available through Workaway and, if you only have a few days or a couple of weeks to spare and inquire by random chance at the right time, they may have a need for manual labour to complete a specific task. They describe this as effectively couch surfing.
Hetta makes no bones about the level of hard work and commitment required for all their roles. They do some of their recruitment via work exchange networks and an overview of their options can be found on their website here.

Accommodation & Costs: Interns get full board and accommodation. Farmhands applying through Workaway receive breakfast, lunch and accommodation, but should factor in the cost of joining the work exchange platform. Couch surfers get accommodation with lunch.
Other Opportunities to Volunteer in Finland
Allianssi Youth Exchanges mostly sends young Finns abroad but they do place international volunteers with their workcamps in Finland every year, recruited through partner organisations abroad. KVT, the Finnish branch of Service Civil International does much the same. Maailmanvaihto places EU funded volunteers on the EVS programme or self funding participants, if from elsewhere, via ICYE.

Volunteer Experiences*
I Did Overseas Volunteering With 80 Fluffy Huskies For 10 Weeks! – After deciding a gap year was for her, and having always wanted to ride a husky sleigh, a search engine pointed this volunteer towards Hetta Huskies in northern Finland.
* not all these volunteer experiences are with grassroots NGOs or low cost organisations
