Free (or Cheap) Volunteer Work in Finland
Grassroots Volunteering in Finland
The organisations listed below have either got in touch with us to add their details to this or another of our websites, or we otherwise have reason to believe they are actively looking for international volunteers and charge reasonable or no fees to join in, live and work with them:
Hetta Huskies offers both short and multi-day safaris from their farm base, 300km inside the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. They also provide internships and training courses for those interested in either experiencing the world of mushing or developing professional husky guiding skills. Interns work alongside guides as they develop skills in everything from basic dog training to safari guiding and marketing to animal nursing.
The short term shovel work they used to offer to overseas volunteers now goes to local kids. Instead, a three month husky guide internship aims to have participants feel like they leave as competent dog handlers, if not as experienced sleddog guides. They also offer a one month internship targeted at animal or tourism professionals (although it might be open to other applicants in special circumstances), veterinary placements and a longer term gap year placement.
Hetta make no bones about the level of hard work and commitment required for all their roles. They do some of their recruitment via work exchange networks but more information can be found on their website here.
Accommodation & Costs: Shared accommodation and food is provided.
Other Opportunities to Volunteer in Finland
Allianssi Youth Exchanges mostly sends young Finns abroad but they do place international volunteers with their workcamps in Finland every year, recruited through partner organisations abroad. KVT, the Finnish branch of Service Civil International does much the same. Maailmanvaihto places EU funded volunteers on the EVS programme or self funding participants, if from elsewhere, via ICYE.
