PERU
The Inka Porter Project (IPP) is an NGO based in Cusco,
Peru, working with porters and muleteers since 2002. The
Inka
Porter Project is developing a training and drop-in centre
for
porters and muleteers in Ollantaytambo, two hours from
Cuzco.
The
centre will empower indigenous workers in the trekking
industry such that they have the skills and confidence
to make
positive choices about how they work. It will provide
a place to
talk and advice and encouragement about channels for
informing authorities of abuses and problems. Self-esteem
tends to be very low amongst porters and muleteers. This,
compounded with the lack of employment in Peru, contributes
to the prevalence of very poor working conditions.
We
are currently looking for funds to employ training staff,
but
expect the centre to be staffed by volunteers for at least
a
year. We wish to recruit volunteers for a minimum of one
year
in the following roles: Training Centre Director, two
Centre
Managers, a Training Manager and Training Coordinator.

This
project also offers the opportunity to get involved in
field
work and wildlife monitoring during the breeding season
from
March to May each year. Volunteers for other tasks are
welcome throughout the year.
No
specific qualifications or skills are required though
motivation, enthusiasm and a flexible approach are essential.
Volunteers usually spend from 3 to 12 weeks at the Station.

COSTA RICA
Explore remote tropical habitats of Costa Rica with GVI
Global Vision International is pleased to launch a new
conservation expedition to the exotic Rainforest of Costa
Rica.
Expedition
members are urgently required to join the GVI
research teams starting from April 2005 to explore remote
coastal habitat of Costa Rica and work on a variety of
long
term terrestrial and marine conservation and community
education initiatives.
The
expedition is run in conjunction with COTERC (Canadian
Organisation for Tropical Education and Rainforest Education),
Toronto Zoo, Costa Rican National Parks Board and various
universities in Costa Rica and independent researchers.
Based near Tortugero, the aim is to conduct a comprehensive
research programme in this biodiversity hotspot.
As well as contributing to the long term conservation
of
endangered wildlife and unique habitats, this expedition
allows
participants the rare pleasure of visiting remote locations
and
communities that few travellers get to see. Expedition
members receive comprehensive training and as an active
member of a research team will enjoy a unique and rewarding
travel experience in such a diverse country.
Activities include; mammal research, bat and bird studies,
turtle surveys, orchid identification, caiman research,
recording
bird song, GPS mapping and management of the trail system

necessary as the GVI training programme will provide a
base
line and holistic understanding of all aspects of the
rainforest
and coast line, on which to build throughout the expedition.
Training covers; conservation issues, survival techniques,
photo trapping, monitoring techniques, bird, bird call
and
mammal identification, amphibian and reptile studies and
basic
"Rainforest" first aid.

CAMEROON
From September 2004 there will be a volunteer programme
in
The Republic of Cameroon which is a French/English speaking
member of the Commonwealth. Our partners are Mr &
Mrs
Orock Thomas who set up "United Action for Children"
in 1996
as a centre in Buea for disadvantaged young people needing
that extra care for education and job-skill training.
There is a
full website pictorial guide and walk through on
www.africatrust.gi
Buea,
in the northern English speaking coastal region of
Cameroon is in the foothills of Mount Cameroon, West Africa's
highest active volcano, it is one of the wettest places
on planet
earth and is still [just !] an eco-environmental paradise.
Former volunteers are available for comment by e-mail.
Volunteers should understand French but the working
language for both the two week Africatrust induction course
and day-to-day work is English.
Volunteers
will be housed within their own accommodation
close to the project. The mid-visit break would be to
visit the
capital of Cameroon, the French speaking region as well
as an
opportunity to climb Mount Cameroon if it is not erupting!

Inland around the Ashanti capital of Kumasi is an established

west of
Kumasi. These are under the part-time direction of Dr
K.Filson
DVM (a government area director of agriculture) and his

who live in Kumasi. Other projects may be offered upon

On
the coast at Accra, the capital, there is a new programme

volunteers are in the longer term residential management
team. It is a programme to bring selected young people
off the
streets to provide free sports training as well as then
offering
free English and Computer learning classes. Volunteers
may
select either to stay in the nearby family guest
accommodation of Mr Ray Quarcoo [ the Founding President
of The Bridge Foundation ] or with other nearby families.
There is a beach house for week-ends and opportunities

British
management.

MOROCCO
In January 2005 there will be a renewed programme in
Taroudannt, Kingdom of Morocco. The host organisation
will
be Groupe Taroudannt Horizon ["GTH"] which is
a recently
registered Moroccan Non-Government Organisation made up
of teachers and medical professionals in the southern
walled
town of Taroudannt.
Taroudannt
is where the Africatrust programme first started in
1994. We are well known and have many friends. The
website www.africatrust.gi shows you Taroudannt which
is 40
kms from the Atlantic coast for week-ends swimming
and fishing. GTH aims to provide the extra care needed
to help
those young people in Taroudannt who are too often left
out of the normal state care, education and training
programmes. They are helping those with physical, social,
economic and learning challenges.
The
members of GTH know of our past performance [see the
website reports and newsletters 1994-1998 ] and are keen
to
invite French and/or Arabic speaking graduates to work
with
them. Volunteers would stay with families in Taroudannt
and
there would be the normal Africatrust two week induction
course covering language, culture, health and general
matters.
The mid-visit break would be to the Sahara Desert as well
as
an opportunity to climb Mount Toubkhal - North Africa's
highest mountain - see website for piccies. For more details:
