VOLUNTARY
Community Center Volunteers: We need volunteers to staff
White Horse, Dupree, Iron Lightning, Isabel, LaPlant,
and Swift Bird. The community centers in all of our communities
with the exception of Dupree and Eagle Butte are the only
source of consistent structured after school activities
which include homework time, craft time, game and sports
time, movie night on Friday night, and special day trips
or activities. Each center is equipped with a computer
from the Drug Elimination Program, which may be the only
one in that community. The roads are dirt roads, and during
inclimate weather are impassable. Each center, which is
a HUD house leased to the Sioux YMCA has a library/homework
room, a craft area, a game area, a kitchen, bathroom,
and 1 bedroom used by the volunteer to live in during
their service.
Under
the direction of the all Lakota Board of Directors and
the training and supervision of an experienced, professional
YMCA staff, volunteers are recruited from diverse socioeconomic
backgrounds and broad geographic areas, locally, nationally,
and internationally. These community volunteers live in
the small, remote communities, providing tutoring during
and after school, developing leadership skills in the
youth and adults, acting as healthy lifestyle role models,
and providing fun, safe, and supervised activities as
an alternative to risky behaviors. But the volunteers
by themselves cannot increase the quality of life. Volunteers
encourage and support community members to become mentors
and get involved with youth activities. Telephone (605)
365-5232 or fax (605) 365-5230. Contact Michael J. Burgett,
Executive Director, General Convention of Sioux YMCAs,

The Visitoz Scheme. Website: www.visitoz.org
We have rural jobs in Australia for anyone who has a Working
Holiday Visa and is looking for a challenge for up to
one year. Sheep and cattle stations, farms and rural hospitality
enterprises cannot recruit staff from the local Australian
population - because there is nothing for them to spend
their money on. This is ideal for backpackers because
they can save all their money, to spend it later on a
good holiday on the Reef, exploring, or doing the 1001
other things young people like to do with surf, sea and
sand. All jobs are paid at the Award (Union negotiated)
wage, food and accommodation are also supplied free of
charge. We particularly need: good horse riders; machinery
drivers, ie. tractors, dozers; teachers; hospitality workers
of all sorts; cooks and chefs; farm workers; and anyone
ready for something different who would like to learn
some new skills. Contact Visitoz in the UK on wdtb@aol.com
