So this is it, in a nut shell. We are all aware how little 4 million rupiah is after the exchange, but consider where you will be living. The average monthly salary in Medan is Rp. 300,000. Earning over 10 times the normal salary is living like royalty.

The cost of local food is so inexpensive, you will be amazed. For a meal of chicken fried rice you wont pay more than Rp 6,000. For the 3 minute taxi ride to school Rp 4,000 will be sufficient. If you wish to take a "becak" only half that will be necessary. The cheapest thing to do in Indonesia is travel. A nice holiday weekend in Brastagi, including transportation, hotel, food and drink can be done for under Rp 100,000.
