Hello. We were unable to bring you an issue of JAB last month
(our apologies) so we have combined two issues into one. The
reason: we’ve been busy buying an apartment in Turkey and
today we got the keys.

We have been enjoyably homeless for nearly a year and, at
last, have a place to call our own and rest our heads between
travels. Though until we can afford to buy some furniture we’ll
be doing so on a bare floor. Still, the place is our first home so
we don’t care that we don’t have a bed.
Last issue we were headed to Skopje and said goodbye to the
lovely family we stayed with in Ohrid. We couldn’t find a cheap
bed in the city so after wandering around until the 5am train
arrived we moved on to Thessaloniki.
We arrived in Turkey via the UK, coming out for £20 with
Parador Properties. Though they put us up in a fancy, if leaky,
hotel and fed and watered us for five days we wanted to see
more of the area before deciding if Turkey was for us.
We have since been congratulated many times for “escaping”
and though we had fun with Parador we felt their apartments
were overpriced and in the wrong end of town for us.
Altinkum, our new home, is more package tourist than
backpacker but it’s by the sea and the local Turks are friendly
so we feel we can live here happily enough. Turkey seems to
have a lot to offer and we are looking forward to exploring
more of the country once we have fully set up home.

stock control. Two weekly stock takes must be taken.
Responsible to keep the beverage cost in line with the

restaurant or on the chosen venue, etc. Make sure the bar
service is up to standard.

soon as possible (with one week's break at Xmas), or in the

mother needs assistance with washing, dressing and eating,

and lovable person, with a surprising sense of humour. She
has recently had a major operation for cancer, and is very frail.
She suffers from glaucoma, and has had minor strokes. These
had led to dementia in the form of short term memory loss.
The carer(s) should therefore have good experience of dealing
with the very elderly. The post would involve 5 days per week,
with 2 days off, when I or another family member would return
to take over. It would suit a couple, perhaps on a jobshare
basis.
A car is available for the carer(s), as shops are 15 minutes
away. The house is a single storey modern villa in a
spectacular mountain setting in the Eastern Pyrenees, on the
periphery of a hamlet. One month's notice would be a
condition, as my mother is on the waiting list for a care home,
and the post would be renewable if the wait extends beyond
1st April 2007.

and I thank you for your interest in working at my hotel, the
Jaipur Inn. I am keen to provide both room and board for a
foreign tourist in exchange for him or her to help me run one of
three main aspects of my hotel: the roof-top café (mentioned in
the Lonely Planet Guide Book), the house-keeping and
reception, or the main restaurant.
In this position, I offer much autonomy to you as my partner.
For example, when running the rooftop café you will be
responsible (and have the reasonable liberty) to choose the
limited menu for which you will buy the supplies through our
local suppliers and for which you will prepare the meals. Also
you will be able to choose the décor, set the tables as you
wish, and choose suitable music that interests you (all, once
again, within my budget and from the local markets and
shops).
The jobs offered in our main restaurant and for the house-
keeping will demand less of your influence in planning, but an
equal share of your skills as a director and worker. In all
positions you will have local employees working alongside you
and they will be happy to assume many of the time-consuming
tasks (such as dish-washing and basic food preparation) that
you mightn’t be able to handle alongside your other
responsibilities.
On my end of the bargain, so to speak, I offer a room in my
house (just behind the Jaipur Inn) and what food you eat
throughout the day. To avoid confusion, I don’t provide bottled
water and carbonated drinks to employees, nor do I cover the
expenses of eating out at restaurants. Furthermore, I will help
to train you at the beginning of your stay to get you up to
speed with how things run. Subsequently, I will be available to
answer questions and provide direction when you need it. I
don’t expect that you have previous experience with any of the
job positions that I offer. I simply ask that you are truly an
honest, self-motivated, competent and quick-learning
individual with a sincere interest in working at my hotel during
your travels.
Since I must take considerable time to train you at the
beginning of your work-stay, I ask that you remain for a
minimum of one month. I feel that is reasonable to offer a five-
day trial period during which we can learn what tasks are
appropriate for you and whether we work well together. But,
primarily, this period will serve to expose you to your duties
and to the town, and it will allow you to decide if this
opportunity is for you. After this time, I have an informal
contract to sign that will outline my demands of you and what
you can expect in return from me.

volcano, as well as working in the botanical garden doing tree

will be able to contribute to the preservation of the unique
ecology found on the island and within the crater of the

New Zealand Kaikoura Programme, South Island
WorkingAbroad Projects
An opportunity to live and work with the Te Runanga O Maori
tribe of Kaikoura on New Zealand's South Island. The project
directly links the traditional spiritual connection between
people and sustainable natural resource use with a
groundbreaking model for sustainable communities in the 21st
century.
The work is a continuation of a project to develop a wetland
area on the Oaro riverbank; the objective for Te Rununga O
Kaikoura is to restore an area of wetland for conservation
purposes and also as an area for the collection of food for the
local people. Food collection is a traditional Maori activity and
is carried out in a sustainable way. Volunteers will be involved
in developing a wetland area on the riverbank - this will include
planting of wetland plants, construction of footpaths, simple
boardwalks and bridges. Time will also be spent at the Marae
(Maori village) gaining appreciation of traditional Maori
activities and their approach to sustainability.
Dates: 26th February to 12th March 2007
Volunteers stay at the Takahanga Marae - the traditional
meeting place of the Te Runanga O. Its not generally open to
the public, so very few have the chance to experience living
there. Kaikoura is also well known for its marine eco-tourism
operators, with whales, dolphins etc.
The cost for the 2 week project is £650, which covers all
project costs, including all food, accommodation, medical /
accident insurance, transport from/to the pick-up, transport
to/from the worksite and so on.

An opportunity to volunteer with a community based group
working in rural Lesotho and take part in developing
sustainable tourism and environmental programmes alongside
the local people. This project is very special, from it's location
to the people you'll meet. Although the area does experience
some tourism, this is isolated from the wider community. On
this project, you'll experience the area as the locals do, and in
the process help start the process that will lead to greater local
benefit from their stunning natural resources.
Volunteers will focus on environmental conservation of the
Maletsunyane Gorge and will work to improve the footpath
down to the bottom of the waterfall. The youth group will also
take you on a cultural tour around their villages to give you a
taste of Basotho life, food, music and culture. You will also
have the opportunity to stay a night with a local family in
traditional rondavals.
Dates: 18th February to 4th March 2007
The cost for the 2 week project is £770, which covers all
project costs, including all food, accommodation at
Semonkong Lodge, medical/accident insurance, transport
from/to the pick-up, transport to/from the worksite and so on.

Volunteers for teaching English in Indian Schools and Colleges
Unity Charitable Trust
Volunteering, one of the pillars of philanthrophy is a powerful
factor in social service. We invite volunteers from UK / USA /
AUSTRALIA / CANADA / EUROPE for teaching ENGLISH in
kindergarten, primary or high schools and in colleges. Lesson
plans based on the syllabus and for spoken English skills will
be provided to the volunteers.
The age group of the students is between 2 years to 21 years
and the volunteers have the option to work either in a
kindergarten, a primary or a high school or in a college. The
working hours will be from 9 AM to 4 PM Monday through
Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the volunteers can go out
on weekend trips to many tourist spots like hill stations and
beaches in Tamilnadu and Kerala. The volunteers can work for
1 month to 5 months.
So many volunteers from abroad have successfully
participated in this sector and gained practical knowledge of
Indian education system. Homely food with packaged drinking
water and neat accommodation will be provided to the
volunteers and phone, internet facilities are available on
payment basis. Since, we are not receiving any outside
funding, we are forced to collect homestay charges at 350
USD per month per volunteer and for the following months 200
USD per month. The volunteers can fly to CHENNAI from their
countries and from Chennai, domestic flights are operated to
MADURAI.. From the Madurai airport, the volunteers will be
picked up by car to VIRUDHUNAGAR.
Our past volunteers really enjoyed the home stay and mingling
with the family members, attending local functions and
ceremonies can not be forgotten ever by the volunteers.

run our small, modern hotel, in exchange for full
accommodation including breakfast. Our hotel is centrally
located in a traditional Seaside Resort in South Shields
