JAB IS BACK AND ON THE MOVE AGAIN
Hello, the Jobs Abroad Bulletin is back. Our apologies for not
being able to send you an issue of JAB for a while but a
number of events - including family illness and bereavement,
homelessness, and some serious computer, server and
connection problems - have knocked us a little bit wobbly and
it has taken some time to get reorganised.
Apologies too if you have sent us email and have not received
a reply. We’ve only been able to connect to the i-net
intermittently to receive email and until yesterday have been
unable to send mail.
There are still a number of things to sort out. The website
needs some TLC and updating and we’re trying to find a less
laborious way of updating the Overseas Job Centre – the way
we did so previously is impractical for our present situation as
we are on the road again.
We are currently in Corfu Town, Greece, and intend to stay for
a few months to get work done. We weren’t really ready for an
extended trip and so have spent the past few months bouncing
back and forth to the UK, crashing with family and friends for
as long as we dare before jumping on a plane to give them
some respite.
Destinations have included Egypt, Bulgaria and Romania and
though we’ve lots of stories and tips we’d love to pass on they
will have to wait as you’ve been waiting long enough for this
issue as it is.

2006 Summer Hire
Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort
The Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort is a 32 unit Motel that
includes an on premises ice cream shop, monthly rental units
and various sport activities and beach amenities. The resort is
a family business with a Mediterranean flair (our family is
Greek-American) and we have housed foreign students on
property to provide help during the high season months of
June through September. The following is a description of the
three areas were seasonal employees will be assigned. Our
intent is to provide a broad range of work experience to our
employees and provide exposure to all aspects of motel
operations. Actual assignments will vary based on skill levels,
interest and scheduling.
ICE CREAM SHOP CLERK: Ice Cream shop starts the day in
morning serving coffee along with a small amount of pastries.
The rest of the day Ice Cream, candy, soft drinks and a small
number of shakes are served. The facility is a small log cabin
on property with an open seating area. Job duties include set-
up and stocking shop before opening, preparing coffee, ice
cream cones, shakes and sundaes for guests, cleaning interior
and exterior areas of the shop, cleaning, taking inventory,
completing replenishment order forms, watering plants and
shut down tasks in the evening.
FRONT DESK/OFFICE: This role will be filled by those
individuals who have a strong command of the English
language, desire direct and phone-based interaction with
customers and demonstrate strong customer service skills.
Duties include responding to inquiries over the web, via the
phone or in person regarding the resort and surrounding
amenities. Taking reservations (includes posting in our
Property Management software application, sending
confirmation letters and filing), showing rooms, checking
guests in and out, running the night audit, dealing with
discrepancies, preparing the maid and maintenance lists,
supervising the laundry, accepting monthly rents, maintaining
journals and filing.
GROUNDSKEEPER: Job duties include maintaining the
cleanliness of the beach and hotel exterior, setting up beach
chairs and umbrellas for our guests, some landscaping
(watering flowers and plants), maintaining the hot tubs, and
some basic maintenance of hotel rooms.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
* First and foremost all positions require a courteous and
friendly attitude towards our guests. There are no exceptions.
* Working to excellent knowledge of the English language. All
employees must be able to communicate effectively and
understand instructions clearly the first time.
* Attention to detail and pride of work. From housekeeping, to
the ice cream shop to the front office, work must be done
completely, neatly and to the customer’s satisfaction.
* Front office skills require working knowledge of computer
applications, organizational skills and the ability to supervise
others in a positive and effective manor.
* Other important skills include the ability to handle sometimes
difficult customers, multi-tasking, working as a team/supporting
each other, willingness to work evenings and weekends.
COMPENSATION:
The housekeeping, and ice cream shop positions pay $7.00 an
hour plus tips. Tips at the ice cream shop can be significant.
The front desk position pays $8.00 an hour. Grounds keeping
position pays $9.00 an hour. ALL positions require the signing
of an employee contract that includes the possibility of a bonus
for strong performance and a financial penalty for early
termination or willing departure in advance of scheduled end
date.

* Through regular promotion assist residents in all aspects of

entails: We run a cafe/Bar in the Marina of Puerto Sherry, in El

the week. The tips are divided each week between all the staff
that have worked that week. The amount varies depending on

The school is in Jhunan, Miaoli County, a beautiful beach town
with year around hot weather. The town has a lot to offer,
restaurants, shops, night markets, cycle routes, bowling alley,
river and beach. It is a quiet town with excellent bus and train
links. Everything is open very later but there are no major night
bars or clubs. For these you can take a 15 minute train ride to
Hsinchu, a pleasant small town with masses of night time
activities.
The teaching hours are Mon - Sat

Wed 1- 9

Sat 8.30 - 12.30
Although the teaching hours start at 2pm, you will only ever
start teaching at 4pm earliest when classes start. The time
prior is used for preparing lessons and is paid.
There is NO telephone teaching. The classes are small in size,
expect between 4 and 12 students. Classes are different levels
and follow the different level of school text book which you will
teach from. The children range in range, from around 7 – 13.
The pay will be approximately NT$55,000 depending upon
experience.
Accommodation: the school provides FREE accommodation in
fully furnished luxury and spacious 3 bedroom apartment,
including use of gym facilities. You will be responsible for
paying bills. The apartment has 3 double bedrooms, 2
bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen, 2 balconies, washing
machine, living room with cable tv and dvd player and dining
area.

Make a positive impact on the environment by choosing one of
our sea turtle conservation programs. We give you the choice
of three breath-taking locations (Caribbean and Pacific coast)
and the opportunity to experience a true Costa Rican
conservation project at an affordable price. We welcome
students, travellers and professionals from around the world
who have an interest in hands-on conservation and data
collection work with an endangered species.
The qualifications and experience required is dependent on
the position applied for. This ranges from just needing to be fit
and healthy to requiring a Degree in Biology, Conservation or
a related subject. Several of the projects have no language
requirements and one requires at least a conversational level
in Spanish. The work of the volunteers ranges from beach
patrols and hatchery shifts to in-water sea turtle population
monitoring (including snorkeling and/or diving).
The cost of participating as a regular volunteer ranges from
US$8 to US$16 per day. Research assistants receive free
board and lodging throughout the duration of their stay.
The location of each project ensures the area is rich in wildlife
and you may see up to three species of monkey, sloths,
caimans, anteaters, coatimundis, kinkajous, raccoons,
butterflies, bats, leaf-cutter ants, white tail deer and up to 400

An initiative aimed at using voluntourist labour and donor
funding to alleviate rural poverty, protect the forests, and
promote sustainable eco-tourism.
VWB or Voluntourists Without Borders is a non-profit initiative
established by Track of the Tiger - a soft adventure tour
operator based in Chiang Mai, Thailand since 1986.
The Initiative puts volunteer labour, and the funding they
secure, to work alongside ethnic minority and rural Thai village
groups under a programme to establish a world class eco-
tourism industry.
Our aim is that the attractions developed for the ecotourism
industry, will be owned and operated by the ethnic minorities
(hill tribes) and rural Thai villagers themselves, who have so
far not benefited from a genuine stakeholding in the Thailand's
tourism industry.
The VWB Initiative - targets voluntourists from: the GAP year
student community, post graduate studies students, and
people on mid or post career breaks who wish to do something
for the disadvantaged and for the environment.
Programmes are not expensive and are transparently priced.
They are designed to appeal to the MNC's (multi national
corporations) many of whom have funds available, under their
corporate social responsibility programmes, to support schools
or other groups so that they may fund their attendance of a
VWB programme.
We at VWB believe that there is no better way to interact with
the ethnic minority groups and rural Thai villagers than by
spending time as a 'voluntourist', and that anybody who does
so, will take away far more than they give…

Volunteers needed in the Mexican Caribbean
Centro Ecologico Akumal
As an environmental conservation organization, Centro
Ecologico Akumal (CEA) has a wide range of programs aimed
at studying and protecting the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef
System from the effects of unsustainable development. CEA's
projects include: Water Quality Monitoring; Advanced Waste
Treatment Solutions; Marine and Coastal Protection (including
coral reefs, mangroves and seagrasses) and Sea Turtle
Conservation. CEA's Mission is to monitor the impact of
development on the regional ecosystems culture; to report
findings and their significance to the public through education;
and, through education, to influence public policy.
We ask that foreign volunteers pay a US$200 one-off fee,
while Mexicans pay US$100. In addition to helping us with
repairs and maintenance, this fee helps us cover basic
expenses associated with the volunteer's stay such as
cleaning, water, gas, internet and electric.
The exceptions to this fee are volunteers to the Marine and
Coastal Protection Program. As this program has greater
expenses, it will charge US$300/month (with a minimum of 3
month stay). We have scholarships for Mexicans in the Marine
and Coastal Protection Program, for details contact the
program coordinator).
In exchange, we offer housing in shared dormitories housing
(less than 100metres from the beach), but no meals. We do
have a kitchen for communal use by staff and volunteers, but
purchasing food is the volunteer's responsibility.
The minimum stay can vary according to the needs of the
program into which the volunteer is accepted, but we usually
do not accept stays of less than one month. We usually ask for
a six-week stay for the Turtle Program and look for a 3-month
commitment from volunteers to our Marine and Coastal
Protection Program.

water sampler that includes electronic, hydraulic, and

Community Work and Volunteer Projects in Madagascar

Programme Description:
The Pioneer Madagascar Programme allows volunteers to
work on humanitarian, sustainable development and
environmental projects. Particularly suited to adults interested
in development and ecology (who may be looking for
experience as an entry point into an ethical career) or who
simply want to make a difference and have a meaningful
holiday experience.
Programme Duration and Frequency:
The Programme sends between 10 and 20 volunteers for ten
weeks, four times a year in January, April, July and October.
Shorter placements are available by arrangement.
Prerequisites:
Enthusiasm and cultural sensitivity. All ages are welcome (past
range 18-55); training is given; volunteers learn basic
Malagasy so that they may work together with members of
rural communities giving them a unique insight into the culture.
Cost:
Successful applicants pay for pre-project costs such as flight,
insurance and visa and are required to raise a minimum

Scuba Diving Trainees wanted for 2006 season in Zante
Eurodivers
We are a PADI Dive Centre located on the resort island of
Zakynthos (Zante), Greece and are looking for enthusiastic,
fun loving people wanting to gain experience of the
recreational dive industry to work in our divemaster internship
program for our 2006 season.
We are looking for people willing to work hard and with an
interest in scuba diving. The program will qualify you at the
end of the season as a PADI Divemaster - the first
professional level qualification. You don't necessarily have to
be a diver already, just have an interest and want to learn.
Our program works like this: in exchange for working for us for
the summer season, our interns get their dive education for
free, from beginner all the way up to PADI Divemaster. We pay
for their accommodation, so the only real costs to them are a
flight to Greece and some spending money. While we don't
pay our interns a salary as such, since their education is
essentially their reward, we offer them the opportunity to make
good commission on sales of diving and equipment.
Duties of a Divemaster trainee include all aspects of the dive
industry from filling scuba tanks, servicing equipment, and
equipping divers to working in the dive shop in sales or office
duties. As their education progresses, trainees take on duties
such as leading groups of qualified divers and assisting
instructors with courses.
Interns invaluable experience of the dive industry and they
also have probably the best summer of their life. The learning
curve for the courses is quite steep and there's quite a lot of
theory to study in addition to the day to day job, so self-
motivation is essential.
The offer is open to people of all levels of qualification, even
complete novices. All that's required is a passion to work in the
dive industry. If you have that, our instructors can teach you
the rest. However, it would take significantly more time for our
instructors to take a complete novice from all the way up to
Divemaster than, say, someone who is already a
Rescue Diver. Therefore, we would want a complete novice to
join us for most of the season, whereas the Rescue Diver
could join us for just a month or two to gain the Divemaster
qualification. In addition to diving experience, desirable –
though not essential - attributes of interns are a full driving
license, spoken European languages, computer skills and
sales/retail skills.
We have centres in the two main resorts: Tsilivi and Laganas.
Laganas is the biggest resort on the island and is "party
central", with plenty of bars and clubs, while Tsilivi is slightly
quieter with more restaurants and bars than clubs. We have 2
dive boats, one which takes up to 40 divers and one which
takes up to 12.

Work and Travel Argentina programme is a great opportunity
to study and work in South America and experience a new and
foreign culture. This is a ‘hostel management’ programme,
which lasts for at least 45 days (although it can be renewed for
another 45 days period on the request). It takes place between
three different hostels in Argentina located in three fascinating
locations. The candidate spends 15 days in each hostel
learning different management skills and developing their
knowledge in tourism. The three hostels are all in different
areas of Argentina so the candidate gets to travel around and
experience urban life, jungle life and life in the mountains
whilst still doing the placement.
Participants will have 5 daily hours of activities where they will
develop the following tasks: promotions, reception, computing,
advertising, camping, cooking, restaurant, housekeeping,
barman, maintenance, administration and customer service.
This includes one hour per day of classes in Hostel
Management. Moreover, participants will have one hour
Spanish lessons 5 times a week and one hour tango classes
twice a week.
In addition, the hostels can organise excursions and activities
on request if you feel that you would like to participate in some
extra activities. These include horse riding in Patagonia, skiing
and snowboarding programmes, skydiving, trekking and
visiting glaciers, water rafting, tango shows, seeing the Iguazu
Falls by boat, football matches, scuba diving, fishing,
paragliding, golf and mountain biking. You can also use
lockers, maps, tourist information, room service and radio, TV
and video facilities. Multilingual library is free of charge.
Anyone can apply for this placement as long as they are willing
to learn and are enthusiastic individuals. Being able to speak
Spanish would be a bonus but it is by no means a prerequisite
as many of the staff in the hostels speak English fluently.

Community Development Volunteer
Bridges to Community
Bridges to Community is a non-profit organization located in
Ossining, N.Y. We specialize in providing educational, service
oriented travel opportunities to Nicaragua and Kenya.
Participants work alongside the local communities on
construction, medical clinic work and sustainable development
projects. Some groups work on building houses in the areas of
Masaya and Ticuantepe, near Managua. Others travel to
Siuna where groups participate in medical clinic work and
sustainable farming practices with local farmers.
Our Kenya trips are in partnership with the Green Belt
Movement and focus mainly on reforestation projects although
some community or small village-related project is usually
included. During the safari participants will: visit the site of our
common ancestors in the archeological digs of the Rift Valley;
learn about Kenyan culture, politics, and social concerns; live
in a Green Belt Community; experience the work of the Green
Belt Movement under the guidance of Nobel Peace Prize
winner and founder and Wangari Maathai and her staff; and
discover the beauty and wonder of Kenya’s natural world at a
local Wildlife Center. Kenya trips are typically in the months of
June, July, or August. This summer we will travel to Kenya
July 8th thru July 23rd.
Some of our groups are from schools, colleges or churches
while others are general public and include individuals from
various areas of the country. Trips to Nicaragua are usually 8
to 10 days, while trips to Kenya are 14-16 days in length.
Individuals can join many of the group trips. We’ve including

This internship provides the opportunity to gain teaching

Volunteers will commit to an eight-week time period, from
either June 1 - July 31 2006 or from August 1 - September 30,

Work as Research Assistant volunteers and take part in night
patrols, flipper tagging, data collection (egg counts, nest
relocation), nest excavations and so on. Provide hands-on
field experience with the world's largest sea turtle, and help
with the reduction of illegal egg poaching activities.
Known as the Spice Isle because of its’ high production of
nutmeg, Grenada is a small volcanic island, 21 miles by 12
with a population of 90,000. It has many beaches along its
indented coastline, lush rainforest in the interior and remains
one of the least spoilt of the Caribbean islands. It also plays
host to one of the major leatherback sea turtle nesting sites in
the Caribbean with hundreds of nests laid each year. In 2003,
586 nests were laid on Levera beach, Grenada’s main nesting
site and where the majority of our research takes place. The
beach is only 700m in length which makes it an ideal research
site, with high density nesting (10+ activities per night during
peak season).
Research Assistant volunteers work in teams of 6 and live in
the picturesque north east of the Island. The area is a
windswept piece of paradise, which boasts a number of
uninhabited offshore islands surrounded by coral reefs
teeming with life. During your free time, there is plenty of
diving and snorkelling to do, as well as rainforest trails and hot
springs to visit.
Cost is 795 pounds for 3 weeks and includes quality
accommodation, food, training, project materials etc.
2006 Project Dates - 3 week projects - maximum stay 12
weeks: 27 May to 17 June.
April, May and June are peaking nesting season for
leatherbacks, so lots of opportunities to work with turtles if you
join then!

Volunteers will teach English in public schools to students of
varying ages and abilities although school children will mostly
be 5 to 16 years of age and have basic English skills.
Volunteer will teach for 3 to 4 periods a day, each period goes
for 45 minutes, 6 days a week, Saturday is a day off.
Depending on location of schools normally there are 15 to 40
children in a class. Volunteer will teach either independently or
with a Nepali counterpart who assists volunteer to solve
language barriers if they appear in the class.
Volunteer also be encouraged to exchange teaching
methodology with Nepali teachers and conversational English
to enable them to teach English in the future.

Nepali language, cultural training and TEFL and ESOL

From a structural and decorative point of view, the buildings
are in good shape having been entirely refurbished prior to my
purchase a year ago, however the plumbing, electrical and
drainage systems are an environmental nightmare and as
such require replacing. Apart from the afore mentioned, brick
laying and wet trades would also come in handy as would
carpentry as we breath some life into and possibly extend the
present living accommodation.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone who is serious
about saving the planet and has a one of the above skills to
offer, whether for a short term experience or possibly getting
involved in a long term objective. In the short term and in

a (UK management team) Call Centre based in Prague has
one big advantage over working in a Call Centre somewhere in

You'll be making or receiving calls to consumers and
businesses in the UK from state of the art (air con which is a
'must' in Prague in the summer)offices close to the city centre.
We'll also help you to find accommodation as we work with
Pragues leading Expat rental companies - the more the
merrier - 2 or 3 sharing can offset the rent.
