French Encounters
63 Fordhouse Road, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire B60 2LU
Tel:01527 873645
Fax: 01527 832794
Email: admin@frenchencounters.com
This is a small, independent enterprise running language study
field trips for 10 to 13 year olds, based in two chateaux in
Normandy. It employs young people each year aged 18 to 22
to work for 4 months from mid-February as animateurs / trices.
Work involves accompanying coaches and giving
commentaries on places visited; supervising children on visits
and picnics; organising activities and entertainment.

Animateurs' principal role is to encourage children to speak
French, enjoy French food and culture and, in the words of the
Director, Patsy Musto, 'become good and positive Europeans'.
Applicants need to have good, conversational French. An A
level in French is desirable, but students without formal French
qualifications will be considered if they have fluency and
accuracy. Experience of working with 10 to 13 year-old
children would be very useful.

All animateurs who have worked with French Encounters have
found the experience invaluable and also hugely enjoyable.
They have gained in maturity, organisational and management
skills and, most important, have improved their linguistic skills
immensely. Many have returned in later years to visit, just for
fun. All transport, insurance and full board and lodging is
provided plus substantial pocket money. Compulsory training
and debriefing is also included. Apply before end of August.
Interviews are generally held early to mid September.

Au Pair to our new baby daughter :) Dallas, Texas. We have a
beautiful new baby daughter due at the end of May and we
need some help with her childcare. We are a loving couple,
live in a beautiful spacious, upscale Dallas, Texas home with
lots of space for an au-pair to have her own privacy. Wife
works at home running a nonprofit which promotes cultural
awareness via humanitarian projects in Latin America and Asia
and so she is interested in learning and practicing Spanish.
Therefore childcare will be shared with wife. We are hoping to
find someone for 6 months to 2 years. We require that you
already have a visa. We already have a housekeeper, so
housekeeping not required. HOWEVER if you can do a bit of
help with cooking at lunchtime, this is preferred. We have
photos of us and our home we can share and are eager to find
someone soon. We are also willing to pay for some education,
such as English lessons. We prefer NOT to go through an
aupair agency (they charge about $6000 and offer hardly
anything in exchange), but to go direct.

We've got a uniquely beautiful living situation. A peaceful
natural setting in huge home, only 10 minute drive from
exciting downtown Dallas. We've got a baby girl on the way
and can use some help caring for her, as the wife works from
home with an NGO. We are eager to meet you! Our loving
home offers all the most modern amenities, and an
ENORMOUS amount of private space just for you. We will pay
modest weekly stipend of about $130, but all your main
expenses paid (even your airfare, possibly, if you're the right
person). Your room is 25 feet by 25 feet - is 2 stories, and has
private bathroom, cable TV, unlimited internet access,
computer, etc. We live on a lake that is a recreational center of
Dallas, meaning its a great place for relaxing, walking, people-
watching, etc. A very peaceful, inviting, loving home. Would
be happy to call you, share photos, etc. Please contact us
soon. Kimberly and Mark. kimberly@globeaware.com

Because of the diversity of employers, Outback International is
able to offer a wide variety of opportunities within the
agricultural industry with some of the world's largest private
and corporate farming companies. Positions may include:
Irrigation and broadacre farming; Cotton; Grain; Viticulture;
Horticulture; Beef Cattle.

The opportunities are endless with positions in the following
fields: Trade qualified workers (eg Mechanics, diesel fitters,
fabricators, heavy machinery operators (Combines, cotton
pickers etc); Truck Drivers; Sprayer operators / chemical
experience; Plant operators; Tractor drivers; Irrigators;
Agronomists.

International workers must enter Australia under the condition
of either a Holiday Work Visa or Sponsored Work Visa. By
working with Outback International, you have access to a
database of 5,500 employer/clients in the Australian
agricultural industry. Additionally, Outback International can
provide assistance to workers in the areas of taxation,
insurance, banking and superannuation.

Seasonal Opportunities
The diverse nature of farming in eastern Australia opens
opportunities for agricultural work most of the year, with the
exception of August to September which is mid winter.

Winter Crop Field Preparation (January to April)
Crops include cereals, canola and grain legumes and are
located in Victoria , western New South Wales and southern
and central Queensland. Most farms are in excess of 5,000
acres and many are over 20,000 acres. Duties may include
operation of tractors up to 400hp with discs and cultivators up
to 50 foot wide, and spray rig operators for broadacre spraying
with rigs up to 24 metres wide. Shifts are typically 12 hours, 6-
7 days per week. Some very high tech equipment is used in
some situations; including satellite GSP based guidance
systems.

Cotton Harvest (March to June)
Cotton Harvest commences in late March and continues to late
May in most areas. Operators are required for module
presses, boll buggies and pickers. The cotton harvest working

hours are long often 16 hour days, 7 days per week. These
conditions are an excellent opportunity to earn good wages in
a short period of time.

Module press operators do not require high skill levels but the
position is very demanding. Training is provided for those with
combine experience to undertake the highly skilled operation
of a Cotton Picker. After brief instruction and familiarisation, a
tractor operator could successfully operate a boll buggy.

Winter Crop Seeding (April to June)
This work utilises equipment similar to the cultivation gear
used for ground preparation of the crop. Operators of large
4WD tractors, air-seeders and sprayers are usually required.
Shifts are typically 12 hours cultivating, spraying and seeding.

Winter Crop Harvest (October to January)
This is one of the busiest seasons in the Australian agricultural
industry. Experienced combine operators, grain cart drivers,
swather operators and semi-trailer drivers are usually required.
Positions are available with farmers (harvesting for 4-6 weeks
then general farm work) and contractors (up to 3 months).
Contractors usually start the harvest in Queensland in
September / October and follow the harvest south as the
season progresses.

Harvest positions during this time include:
Header Operation
Mostly operating large US or European built machines, i.e.
John Deer, Case IH, New Holland, Agco Gleaner etc. Usually
there are 2 operators per combine and most machines have
30' or larger headers. All cereals and grain legumes are direct
cut except Canola (OSR) which is usually swathed. Drivers are
generally required to service the machine and operate shifts
varying from 8 to 16 hours/day. In most cases the owner or
manager will be responsible for setting up the machine for
different crops. Some highly experienced operators are
required to manage and maintain machines.

Grain Cart Driving
Operating large tractors with grain carts hauling grain from the
combines. Driving a large front wheel assist or articulated 4WD
tractor. Similar hours and conditions to combine driving.
Drivers may also alternate between the Combine and grain
cart.

Swathing
Mainly working for contractors operating self propelled
windrowers in Canola, (OSR) some hay and straw. Usually
starts in Northern NSW and moves south as the crops ripen.
Operators may be required to maintain and adjust the
machine. Usually 1 operator per machine and may be required
to work very long hours on occasions.

Trucking
Truck driving jobs are with both farmers and contractors and
usually involve hauling grain to elevators or larger centralised
storages. Driving conditions are variable with field roads and
highway work. Most common configurations are:
Tandem rigid trucks, some with dog trailer
6 axel semi-trailers
9 axel "B" trains
11 axel road trains
Truck drivers are typically expected to service the vehicle and
operate for long hours. A semi-trailer or road train license is
essential to drive in Australia.

Summer Crop Planting and Management (September to
March)
Farmers require tractor drivers and irrigators for crops
including cotton, sorghum, sunflower, soybean, maize and
others. Equipment is typically large John Deere, Case IH or
New Holland Front Wheel Assist tractors or CAT Challengers
with 8 to 12 row cultivation and seeding gear. Typically 12 hour
shifts.

Summer Grain Crop Harvest (February to June)
Harvest of maize, sorghum, sunflowers, soybeans and other
summer crops commences in Queensland in February and
moves south. Harvesting of maize concludes in some areas as
late as June. Work is similar to harvesting of Winter crops.

Hay and Silage (September to May)
Machinery Operators are required for Lucerne hay production
farms, and with hay and silage contractors. Operators would
be required to operate mowing, raking, bailing (small square,
big square and round) and silage wrapping equipment. Some
irrigation work may be involved.

Beef Feedlot work
Beef feedlots are usually large scale operations up to 20,000
head capacity. Work usually involves operation of feeding and
mixing equipment. Good stock skills, and experience operating
loaders and mixers is needed.

Earthmoving
Positions are available most times of the year for plant
operators - dozers, excavators and scrapers are most in
demand. Top plant operators can expect to earn excellent
wages if working in positions of responsibility.

> EGYPT
Dive into Dahab with Global Vision International.
Global Vision International is pleased to announce the
launch of its third marine conservation project. On this
new expedition to Dahab on the beautiful Sinai
peninsular, Egypt, expedition members can join for as
little as 2 weeks to explore the unique reef ecosystem
and impact its long term conservation. Dahab sits on a
premium reef habitat as close as 5 - 50 metres off
shore making this a remarkable location. As such the
pressure of tourism exerted on the reef has immediate
effect which needs to be managed for long term
sustainability. Working under the guidelines of the
National Parks of Egypt and as part of the GVI
conservation initiative, participants will monitor the
unique coastline through extensive scuba diving
surveys to assess the effects of tourism on the
surrounding area.

Expedition members will have access to diving sites
that most recreational divers will never see, sometimes
only accessible by camel. Time will be spent diving on
the coral reef, collecting identification and abundance
data on turtle species, fish and coral, whilst at the same
time monitoring crown of thorn starfish occurrences.
The reef is known for its diversity of animal life and
coral, and whale sharks were spotted several times last
year. The diverse beauty of the Sinai peninsular below
the surface matches the natural beauty and cultural
interest above the water. Participants will also
experience life alongside the last remaining Bedouins in
the ancient quarter of Assala.

Global Vision International is recruiting participants now to join
the expedition starting in May 2004 for 2 and 4 week periods.
Priority will be given to expedition members who are qualified
to PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent. GVI will accept
and train beginners and divers with PADI Open Water, there is
an opportunity to arrive early to obtain qualifications.

Alternatively, there are limited opportunities for non diving
participants to take part in snorkelling surveys. Prices start
from £695. This newest addition completes a trio of
biodiversity marine conservation projects already run by GVI in
Mexico and Seychelles. Those interested in taking part should
call James Scipioni on 0870 608 8898: or e-mail:
info@gvi.co.uk.

like to make an essential contribution to conservation?

Azafady, a London based charity is offering the opportunity to
give enthusiastic and adventurous individuals a chance to gain

knowledge of development, conservation, and working in an
NGO.

Projects range from researching the feeding habits of the
native Lemurs to using theatre in promoting health education
to children, building wells, and much, much more. All our
projects have been planned with the help of the communities
we are assisting, to ensure their needs are met directly.
Volunteers work together with Malagasy people, giving you a
chance to get involved as an insider, and fully experience this

> SOUTHERN AFRICA
African Conservation Experience. The chance of a lifetime.
Occasionally - very occasionally - you get the opportunity to do
something that will truly change your life. Thats what African
Conservation Experience can give you. Whats more, it also
offers you the chance to make a difference to the future of
some of our worlds most vulnerable creatures and precious
environments.

If you are 18+ (even up to 50 something), young at heart,
adventurous and physically fit, African Conservation
Experience invites you to spend up to three months
volunteering on conservation projects in some of Southern
Africa's leading game and nature reserves.

You'll play an active part in day-to-day work on the reserve
and out in the African bush. Your reward will be sights, sounds
and experiences that will stay with you for life. If you have a
professional interest in conservation, your time on the reserve
will give you some of the most valuable learning opportunities
you could wish for.

At times, we refer to ACE volunteers as students because,
whatever your age, background or interests, you become a
student of conservation during your placement.

We are the Kallari craft cooperative, a grassroots
coalition of Amazon Artisans. Our craft cooperative
began in 1997 with less than fifty families and has
grown to over 400 families, representing 1250 artisans.

The Kallari Cooperative markets unique Amazon
handcrafts in over ten countries, spanning four
continents. This coalition of artisans set out to
establish economic alternatives to rain forest
destruction/logging practices. Our goal is to increase
family incomes without sacrificing natural resources.

In addition, the project has proven to be an excellent
mechanism for inspiring Kichwa youth to learn and
practice traditional harvesting, weaving and carving
techniques. The Kallari Cooperative currently sells
over $50,000 per year of organically produced
agricultural products, such as coffee, cocoa, and
original crafts (jewelry, accessories, and home
decorating items). The cooperative needs to access
additional markets, undertake innovative business
research, and develop attractive promotional
strategies for use in North America and Europe.

International volunteer interns are a very important
resource for Kallari, as they are asked to help
develop international markets, contribute to web-page
construction, help with product design, and prepare
international press releases.

> ISRAEL
Bridge In Britain / Israel Scholarships
The Middle East produces terrible images of tension, violence
and mayhem. Regular visitors to the Region can confirm
however that calm and normality prevail most of the time.

Israel is a classic regional case study. An almost humdrum
normality is the norm in schools, universities, research parks,
factories and farms. The populations of the country - a dizzying
mix of Jews, ranging from the ultra-orthodox to the defiantly
secular, dozens of denominational strands of Christians,
Moslems, Bahais, Druses and Samaritans - live out their lives,
in their markedly different traditions, largely in conditions of co-
existence and mutual tolerance.

The Bridge in Britain scholarship scheme run by Friends of
Israel Educational Foundation provides 12 award winners with
the opportunity to spend six months immersed in this area. In a
programme that runs from January to late July 2005, a British
party of 12 school leavers will spend nearly six months working
in a variety of placements within domestic Israel; and the rest
of the time travelling independently through Israel, the PA,
Jordan and Egypt. The work placements are in both rural and
urban Israel, both in the desert south and the fertile north of
the country; and in a variety of different communities and
cultures within the State of Israel.

Placements by definition are demanding. The Foundation
expects all participants to make their mark on their hosts and
exercise maximum, unrestrained "chutzpah" in all projects.
Equally, the Foundation provides plenty of opportunities for the
participants to indulge their curiosity, explore the area and
discover the peoples, cultures, aspirations and the many
problems of the area. It's an unforgettable experience.
