Hello. After a longer pause than usual here is this issue of JAB.
Our recent travels have reminded us that travelling and working
are not always compatible; we've either been without power
sockets to plug in Mr Benn (the name for our laptop) or internet
access has been a boat and bus ride away from our
accommodation.

The closed Thai-Cambodian border led us to change our plans and
head south to Ko Samui. Staying in a quiet part of the island, Mae
Nam, we loafed about on the beach and hared around on a
moped. I haven't been on a bike for years: the last time I was on
two wheels, in Ibiza, I crashed into a stationary milk float within
seconds of mounting the bike and later nearly broke both wrists
after going over the handlebars.

Older and wiser the bike rides were more successful this time and
we made it around the island unscathed apart from an
unintentional wheelie flinging Dee onto the floor and the bike into
the air, and a brief but interesting excursion up a one way street
("These people are very friendly, look they're waving at us.")

After two weeks of sun, sand and shifty salesmen we moved on to
welcoming and hassle free Malaysia, to Penang. In that culturally
diverse city we did the tourist thing before crossing to Sumatra.

First stop Bukit Lewang, famous for orangutans, magic mushrooms
and tubing down the river. All great fun. Lewang should be the sort
of place that is tucked up in bed by 8pm but this one horse town is
livelier than some capital cities. Pulau Samosir, positioned in a lake
formed by a collapsed volcano, is a more sedate place with
nothing much to do but sit, stare, swim and chat to cat eating
descendents of cannibal converts to Christianity. The stores are
staffed by six year old children and you can hail boats like taxis.

We are presently back in Malaysia, in Malacca, trying to finish JAB
before heading to Singapore tomorrow. Taking advantage of some
of the sleepy places we've been at in the last five or six weeks
we've put some photographs of our trip online and have finally
completed a new issue of The Working Traveller. This issue of JAB
is also accompanied by a repeat of the Travel Security Supplement
from last year. The next issue of JAB hopefully will be sent to you
in a couple of weeks as I want to get it out of the way before (if) we
head to Cambodia and we don't intend to go with Mr Benn.

Lastly, apologies if you've got in touch with us and we haven't got
back to you. Our email backlog has got completely out of hand and
I don't expect to catch up until we get home in a few months.

2 (one for primary section and the other for junior and senior section)
teachers for the semester starting from Sep.1,2003 wanted by
Yandaojie Foreign Language School. Located at 189 Airway Rd.,
Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province in southwest of China,
with a population of 2,930,00 million people living in the downtown
area of about 667,000 square metres, the school is a state-owned
school run by the school board of directors and is under the direct
leadership of Chengdu Education Bureau. The class size is from 20 to
30. There are more than 100 teaching staff and 800 students. At
present there are about 400 students in the primary section, 200 in the
junior and 200 in the senior.

2 (one for primary section and the other for junior and senior section)
teachers wanted now by Dazhou Senior Middle School in Dazhou city,
a small, peaceful and quiet city in east part of Sichuan Province. The
school was founded in 1903 and has been a prestigious school in
Sichuan with a teaching staff of 240, 3,300 students and 49 classes.

which is in the middle part of Sichuan Province. Anyue is a city with
long history and famous stone carving works.

> ROMANIA
English teachers wanted by Romania's street paper, SPUNE
Romania's street paper, SPUNE, is looking for two teachers of English
as a foreign language to spend three months in Romania teaching
English to a small ecumenical group from a dozen different countries.
The location is the 'cultural capital' of Romania, the university city of
Iasi (pr. Yash) in the north east of the country.

SPUNE's British editor has taught on this course the past two years,
and guarantees an interesting and satisfying experience. The teachers
will also have the opportunity to be involved in SPUNE's work with the
homeless and poor people of the city. There might be the opportunity
to organise a basic beginners' English course for them should the
teachers wish, which could considerably increase opportunities to sell
the street paper to foreign tourists and thus increase their income.

There are no living expenses, as the teachers will be comfortably
accommodated at the Ecumenical Institute with all meals provided.
They would also be paid, very well by Romanian standards (about 7
Euro/hour - to put this in perspective a 1lb loaf of bread costs about
0.20 Euro or 13p), and have the opportunity to take part in various
cultural activities and excursions with the students. They would be
expected to teach not more than 20 hours/week. However, they would
have to cover their own return travel to Iasi (from Romania the
cheapest return flights are with Czech Airlines, via Prague). No visa is
now required for British citizens to visit Romania.

The English course runs from 18 March to 21 May 2003, but the
teachers will be asked to arrive one week in advance to accommodate
to Romania. Teachers will have the opportunity to extend their stay
after 21 May should they wish.

Manuals, audio aids, video and other facilities are all provided in a
pleasant, modern teaching environment and there is a very good
British Council English library close by. The students will already have
a working knowledge of English (about lower intermediate level) and
the aim of the course is to considerably improve their speaking,
listening and writing skills.

Though not essential, it would be appropriate for the teachers to have
some religious motive as the course is specifically for young people
(between 18 and about 30) who are involved in the church, and usually
some kind of social or pastoral work, in their own countries. However,
the range of faiths among the students will be wide, including various
protestant churches such as Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran and
Baptist, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Muslim. The course is
sponsored by the World Council of Churches.

Requirements: Teachers should be native English speakers with at
least a TEFL or TESOL level qualification; Be well acquainted with
modern communicative methodology; An additional unqualified teacher
may also be considered to lead free conversation sessions.

For anyone interested in a unique cultural experience in Costa Rica,
volunteers are needed to join the Kan Tan Project, which is located
within the Boruca-Terraba indigenous reserve near the village of
Boruca, SE Costa Rica. Volunteers are needed to build one of 5
indigenous houses on the preserve, starting on the 23 April to 18 June
and 2 July to 27 August.

Over the 2 month period volunteers will be involved in the manual work
connected to the construction of the house, as well as creating trails
into the surrounding forest, reforestation work, growing medicinal and
edible plants etc. Volunteers will be living with a local family in Boruca
village, taking part in their traditions and having the opportunity to visit
and learn from Brunka artisans.

Work for the South African National Parks Board. Global Vision
International (GVI) is seeking independent and enthusiastic Volunteers
to participate in this high profile programme in conjunction with the
South African National Parks Board. These Volunteers will undertake
and develop environmental education and community development
projects aimed at integrating the local communities in conservation
efforts and development programmes.

Participants will be working alongside social ecologists on various
projects in and around the national parks which include the world

renowned Kruger National Park. Wildlife is abundant and cultural
interaction is crucial. All successful candidates will participate in a two
week training course at Kruger National Park which will include first aid
and ranger training.

The focus will be on environmental education, interpretation and
community facilitation programmes. This could include creating
displays, developing education programmes and establishing
relationships with the surrounding communities. Although no specific
experience is necessary, each park has its individual requirements and
GVI will match Volunteers to the appropriate parks.

Volunteers must be over 21 and partake in a selection process aimed
at recruiting the best people for this high profile, unique project.
Volunteers are required to contribute £2995 for the year. This includes
accommodation in the parks, training, project equipment and GVI's
global support structure. The next year long internship starts 1st
February 2004. Some Volunteers are also required for a shorter seven
month internship in June 2003, especially those with an artistic
background. The cost of the seven month programme is GBP£1995.

International Society for Preservation of Tropical Rainforest

conservation work in jungle villages for a minimum of one month in
the Iquitos region.

Doctors and qualified personnel to provide health services within
Indian communities in Iquitos.

Adventuras Amazonias del Chagra Perez
Teach English to Quechua population.

Caligo Butterfly Farm
General assistance required at the farm; gardening, observing,
cleaning etc.

Work available helping scientists, tree planting and in the organic
gardens.

Fundacion Internacional Ecotrackers Network
A range of activities including developing tourism features,
archaeology investigations, site protection, vegetation planting,
English teaching and health care.

Assistants required for an Andean Bear Project and a
Reforestation and Environmental Education Project.
