> ISRAEL VOLUNTARY
BRIDGE IN BRITAIN 2002 (January-July 2002)
The Bridge scheme was first launched in 1961 and annual parties have travelled out to Israel since then. Among the hundreds of school-leavers who have taken part in Bridge, we are proud to include personalities as disparate as Anna Ford of BBC TV; Gerald Corbett, Chief Exec. of Railtrack; Minette Walters, the crime writer; Ian Black, Diplomatic Editor of The Guardian and Elisabeth Hoodless, Chief Exec. of Community Service Volunteers.

Bridge 2002 will run from approx. mid-January to July 2002. The schedule will include several segments: a working place on a kibbutz (collective farm); two months community service in a development town/Israeli new town; work in a northern Israeli moshav (smallholders' co-operative); contact with the many communities constituting modern Israel including Jews - religious and secular, Sabra Israelis and immigrants from Russia, Ethiopia and other places, some of the 35 Christian denominations, Moslems and members of the varied Arab communities in Israel; seminars and organised tours; free time to explore Jordan and Egypt; experience of an archaeological dig - an optional extra - at the participant's expense.

The application procedure is very simple. All applicants are expected to submit: 1. An essay, minimum 400 words, explaining reasons for wishing to spend time in Israel. This must be accompanied by 2. A hand-written covering letter. 3. A curriculum vitae including date of birth, address, home telephone number, religion, academic achievements, interests and future plans. 4. Two passport-size photos. 5. Two references - one academic, one personal. Your written submission should be with us by July 1 2001. Thereafter, we will shortlist several dozen applicants for interview. These interviews will be conducted in mid-to-late July at our office which is situated in North West London. If you are chosen for the programme, you will receive a telephone call and a letter of invitation near to the end of August 2001. The award winning party, a group of up to 12 participants, will then leave for Israel in January 2002. Throughout the period in Israel the group will have the informal back-up of specialist co-ordinators.

Just a few additional points: a. You must be 18 years of age, i.e. a legal adult, by the time of your departure for Israel. b. You must be in good physical and mental health. A medical certificate will be necessary if you are selected. c. We only offer places to British applicants or to individuals permanently resident in the UK. The Programme is of course open to everyone, irrespective of race, religious creed or sex. d. You do not need to speak Hebrew or Arabic, nor need you have a strong linguistic flair. e. BUT it is only worth applying if you have an enquiring disposition; are eager to explore "strange and exotic" parts of the world; and you understand fully that the programme will be quite demanding, presenting you with a series of challenging placements in Israel and the Arab world. f. Unlike many of the other top Gap placements where applicants have to raise a stake of many thousands of pounds, a Bridge place represents a heavily sponsored scholarship place in Israel. g. F.O.I.E.T. guarantees that any applicant shortlisted for interview - but unsuccessful - will be found an unsponsored place on kibbutz.

It will be good to hear further from you. John D A Levy, Friends of Israel Educational Trust, 25 Lyndale Avenue, London NW2 2QB. Tel: 020 7435 6803; fax: 020 7794 0291. Email: foiasg@foiasg.free-online.co.uk Website: www.foi-asg.org

> WORLDWIDE VOLUNTARY
The Youth International Program
Youth International is an experiential education program which focuses upon international travel and inter-cultural exchange, adventure, community service and home stays. Teams of up to 14 people between the ages of 18 and 25 travel together to different regions of the world for the period of one school semester. Through a balanced combination of experiences each Youth International team member is set up for an intense and dynamic first hand education on the region they are traveling. At the same time they are presented with a unique environment and opportunity for self discovery. (Youth International does not affiliate with or adhere to any specific religious or philosophical doctrine) Youth International offers two separate trips. One travels to Asia (including the Philippines, Thailand, India and Nepal) The second travels to Africa (including Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and Namibia). Both trips are offered twice a year. Once in the fall semester which runs from early September to mid December and once in the Spring semester which runs from early February to late May. Dates for next season are; September 4 to December 19, 2001, and Feb. 5 to May 22, 2002.

International Travel and Intercultural Exchange
The world becomes your classroom and experience your greatest teacher as you travel to select regions of the world exploring exotic countries such as the Philippines, Thailand, India, Nepal, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and Namibia. Talk, work, eat, laugh and play with the real people who define the many different cultures you will encounter; a Filipino farmer, a merchant from Delhi, a homeless peasant on the streets of Calcutta, an African tribesman. Go on spiritual quests. Meditate while on retreat with Tibetan Monks. Participate in Tribal rituals. Explore ancient temples. View some of the most spectacular and exciting sites in the world from the Taj Mahal to the Masai Mara. Explore some of the worlds greatest cities; Bangkok, Delhi, Katmandu, Nairobi, and more. Cover almost every imaginable terrain from snowcapped mountains to deserts to rain forests.

Adventure
Trek in the Himalayan Mountains. Search for wild animals on safari. Explore the magic of the under water world while becoming a certified deep sea diver. These are only a few highlights on a trip which holds a new adventure around every corner. Share these adventures with a like minded yet diverse group of approximately fourteen people between 18 and 25 years of age. Develop lifelong friendships. Learn to work, live, play, grow and change together, actively creating your own small traveling community.

Community Service
Lend a hand and make a difference. Youth International is not a guided tour. Rather than gliding through other countries in a glass ship members become personally involved in the issues and needs of the communities in which they visit. A path toward the richest possible understanding of a culture and a truer sense of global perspective and social responsibility. Types of community service projects that Youth International involves itself with include; renovating schools in poor areas of the Philippines, assisting the sick and destitute in Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity clinics in Calcutta, India, teaching English to Tibetan refugees, building water tanks and community centers in east Africa.

Home Stays
Live in the homes of people from a variety of classes and cultures. Understand their life by living it yourself.

Contact Information: Youth International, 1121 Downing Street # 2, Denver, Colorado, 80218, USA. Phone number: 303-839-5877, fax number: 303-839-5887. E-mail address: director@youthinternational.org Website: www.youthinternational.org

Participants are accepted and teams filled on a first come basis for those who are accepted, after a screening process. The cost for all programs is $7,500 USD. This is inclusive of all program costs, including all flights.

> UK VOLUNTARY WORK
Voluntary Work at the Monkey Sanctuary. The Monkey Sanctuary accepts applications for volunteer work from people of all nationalities.

General Information: The Monkey Sanctuary is home to a colony of woolly monkeys, established in 1964 as a refuge for ex-pet and ex-zoo woolly monkeys. The Sanctuary received recognition as the first place where this beautiful species of monkey bred outside its own habitat in the South American rainforests. The Sanctuary is open to the public during the summer months. The care of the monkeys is in the hands of an experienced team of people. As a conservation and educational unit run by a small community, the Sanctuary attracts people of varied backgrounds and interests. The Sanctuary team share concern for animal welfare, conservation and global political issues. The Sanctuary is not a scientific centre, rather, a community of people working to better the captive life of the primate community here.

Volunteers: Over the course of a year, the Sanctuary receives several dozen people for voluntary work, with up to seven staying at any one time. First time volunteers are booked in for either two, three or four weeks. Sometimes placements can be extended, depending on requirements at the time. Usually a few people each year stay for longer periods, often people who have volunteered before and wish to return. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to stay in the house. Younger volunteers are accepted, but have to arrange their own accommodation. Volunteers need a workable knowledge of the English language. No qualifications are needed - volunteers usually come because they share a concern for animal welfare, conservation and the need to question people's attitude to other animals.

Voluntary Work: All year - Volunteers join the Sanctuary team in cleaning monkey territory, preparing monkey food, domestic help, gardening, street collecting and general maintenance. Summer - The Sanctuary is open to the public from Easter to the end of September. During these times volunteers help in various ways: serving in the Sanctuary's vegetarian cafe, and sweeping paths and public areas. Winter: From October to Easter, most work is in the grounds and gardens including monkey territory maintenance. Volunteers help with building, repairing and painting territory structures, management of wildlife friendly areas of the gardens and maintenance of the house and grounds. Volunteers do not work directly with the monkeys under any circumstances. Keepers spend many months learning to recognise not only each individual monkey but also their personalities and the group dynamics.

Financials: Volunteers pay £35.00* weekly towards the cost of accommodation and food. (*£25.00 students / £15.00 unwaged)

Accommodation and transport: Volunteers live in with the Sanctuary team, sharing a room with other volunteers. Food is provided and is vegetarian. We are unable to help with travel costs. The summer holiday period is very popular, and is therefore often fully booked months in advance.

For further information, write to: Mike Brown at The Monkey Sanctuary, Looe, Cornwall, PL13 1NZ (Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope with correspondence requiring a reply) or e-mail monkey_sanctuary_uk@compuserve.com The Sanctuary has a website at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/monkey_sanctuary_uk/

> SCOTLAND VOLUNTARY
Volunteers needed to Restore the Caledonian Forest in Scotland. Trees for Life is an award winning Scottish charity working to restore the Caledonian Forest. The Caledonian Forest of Scots pines, birch, rowan etc formerly covered a much larger area and today only scattered fragments of this forest remain. Trees for Life is helping to pioneer the emerging discipline of ecological restoration, and working to restore a wild native forest to the Scottish Highlands.

The majority of our practical work is done by volunteers who join our work weeks in the Highlands every spring and autumn. The dates for the 2001 work weeks have now been published and we are again looking for people to participate in ecological restoration work in the Scottish Highlands. Volunteers form part of groups of up to 10 participants and two experienced leaders. Weeks start every Saturday from 17 March to 2 June and from 1 September to 20 October. Work includes native tree planting, erecting stock fences around riparian tree regeneration, tree nursery work, fence removal and removing non-native conifers from where these have been planted or have seeded into native woodland, in Glen Affric, Glen Carron and Glen Moriston. We work in cooperation with land owners in our target area, which include the Forestry Commission and the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds - the UK's largest nature conservation charity) as well as private land owners. You do not need any special skills or qualifications to participate, and because the work is often in remote areas you need to be relatively fit but not exceptionally so ( we also run a Gentle Week in the spring).

The weeks cost L65 Pounds Sterling (L33 Pounds Sterling concessionary rate for unwaged) which includes vegetarian food, accommodation and transport from Inverness, Scotland. Further details from Tel: +44 (0)1309 691292 or visit www.treesforlife.org.uk
