items of furniture and getting the office set up with the hope of
doing some work. We are still waiting for our phone line. Without an internet
connection the work we can do on the website is minimal. It
has been so long now, over a year and a half since we last
had a permanent phone line and were able to do some
substantial work on the site, that we’re a little out of practice
and it is difficult to get back into the swing of things. Others too, perhaps you, want to work in Turkey and so, after
months of promises, here are a few suggestions on how to do
so. We’ve met many people here who a have found a niche and
have taken employment for various reasons. Some are
property rich but cash poor. Some have lost a chunk of their
savings through medical misfortune, others dipped deeper
than planned into their pockets to buy that dream home while
some, still of working age, just simply didn’t have much money
to start with and are fed up borrowing from mum. Sometimes the reasons for working are not financial, some
people are a bit bored, not ready to be more than semi retired,
and are looking to do something useful. Others want a reason
to keep away from the many bars for a few hours. Whatever the reasons there are both opportunities and
problems for those that want to work in a resort town in Turkey
like Didim. The local Turks and Kurds will always work for less and work
permits are almost impossible to get. Even foreign bar owners
are not legally allowed to clean an ashtray or wipe a table. Another example of the work regulations here is the recent
regulations affecting foreign private car owners taking their
friends and relatives to the airport or tourist attractions such as
Ephesus. Drivers have been threatened with fines and time in
jail if they have back seat passengers, even when the
passengers are the wife and kids.
Finding work can also often be easier than getting paid. There
are plenty of stories of people who have worked hard, put in
long hours, and then found their wages absent at the end of
the month. But should you still want to work here the most obvious way, in
this town anyway, is to work for an estate agent. Brits, rightly
or wrongly, trust other Brits so estate agent owners are willing
to take on a foreign worker. On this part of the coast there are over 600 legally registered
agents and another 1400 unregistered, often attached to a
restaurant or bar, so finding work is not difficult. The sheer
volume of agencies also makes it easy to move on if you
discover your boss expected you to work for free. Sometimes a wage is paid but often it is commission only and
usually involves placing adverts on websites and dealing with
English speaking clients that walk through the door. Other
property related jobs exist such as looking after the apartments
of the many holiday-home owners. Another area where English speakers are wanted is in the field
of teaching the language to others. For the Turkish English is
the key to jobs in the tourist industry and judged solely from
the English language skills of the residents of our town many
teachers have found jobs in the country. Most schools are found in the major cities of Istanbul, Ankara
and Izmir but competition may be less fierce in smaller towns.
For good advice and a list of schools get a copy of Vacation
Work’s Teaching English Abroad. Speakers of other languages may find success in the resort
areas in which their country people are found in large
numbers. German tourists, for instance, are dominant in
Antalya. Tourism is a major industry in Turkey and jobs for foreigners
are scarce but possible. Some of our friends, the younger ones
that still live with their mums, have had some luck with finding
bar work or DJing but the pay, when it arrives, has been pitiful.
Some work organising a quiz or karaoke may also be possible
but often the wage is a free meal or drinks. For a decent wage and a reliable employer try tour operators
such as Thomas Cook, Sunsail and Mark Warner. Wages are
considerably better though the hours are long and irregular. Other jobs we have heard people doing is masseuse in the
many Turkish baths, writing for English language publications,
translation services and au pair work. Volunteer work is also
available through organisations such as GSM and Genctur. Finally if you have some spare cash shove it in the bank and
live off the high interest rates offered. Many people here,
already blessed with assets, have sold up in the UK and
bought a cheaper property or rented. With the funds they have
left they earn 17 per cent interest each year and don’t have to
lift a finger except to withdraw the loot every few months. Hoshchakal,
Shane & Deirdre
