JAB
(NO MORE) RTW
Hello.
This is the second June issue we promised a couple of
weeks ago. Now we are back in the UK it is time to end
the
introduction we included in every issue detailing our
travels: I'm
confident you don't want to hear how we're loafing around
my
mother's house, looking for a new home and trying to persuade
friends to help us move.
So
this month's intro comes from Catherine of RDF television:
DOCUMENTARY
COMPANY LOOKING FOR TRAVELLERS
"Are
you interested in cooperating with the documentary we
are
currently making for Channel 4? Provisionally titled Travellers
Tales,
it is about long-haul destination travellers who get ill
on the road.
In
the film travellers from gap year adventurers and career
break
backpackers, to students and volunteers in far flung places,
will tell
their stories in their own words.
Perhaps...
You unwittingly transported a bot-fly home from a remote
destination? You are currently on a de-worming programme?
Someone on your expedition was cured by a shaman? You
left the
country on a mission to solve a medical mystery? Or are
you still
staggered by a memorable bout of Delhi Belly? OR DO YOU
KNOW A
BRITISH TRAVELLER CURRENTLY RECEIVING TREATMENT IN A
CLINIC OR HOSPITAL ABROAD?
We
are interested in illnesses ranging from diarrhea to dengue
and
would be very interested to hear your story - funny, painful
or life-
changing - with a view to including it in the documentary.
Should you
be interested in taking part, your journeys will be portrayed
accurately
and responsibly.
The
documentary is part of a major new primetime series about
travel
for Channel 4, produced by RDF Television, one of the
UK's leading
independent production companies. We make documentaries
for all
the main channels ranging from the BAFTA award-winning
Faking It
series for Channel 4 to the internationally acclaimed
'Century of the
Self' series for the BBC. On a practical basis, the film
will be made in
as friendly and low-key a manner as possible.
If
you know of anyone with a tale to tell, please feel free
to pass this
information on to them. I look forward to hearing from
you soon.
Catherine - Catherine.Brindley@rdfmedia.com "
Bye,
Shane & Deirdre.

TANZANIA THAILAND
Global Service Corps. International Internship Opportunities.
Global
Service Corps is sponsoring international internships
in health,
education and environment in Thailand and Tanzania.
Our
health internship programs in Tanzania and Thailand expose
pre-
med, medical and health care students to health issues
in developing
countries and give them some hands-on experience.
In
the Tanzania health internship, program participants assist
Tanzanian educators and health professionals in teaching
HIV/AIDS
prevention to secondary school teachers and students,
as well as
community group members. Participants may also visit local
hospitals
and health facilities and shadow doctors. This enables
participants to
observe many areas of a hospital's operations.
The
Thailand health internship provides opportunities for
participants to
work at Thai hospitals or clinics where they observe and
assist Thai
health professional counterparts. Past participants have
also observed
operations in the operating theater and assisted with
medical
procedures based on their training and experience. Participants
also
offer conversational English training to their Thai counterparts.
Education
internships are available in Thailand and include teaching
English in schools, colleges, government agencies, health
clinics and
monasteries. Participants with an interest in Buddhism
may teach
English to monks and novice monks at "wats"
and be mentored in
Buddhism.
Environment
internships are available in Tanzania and Thailand. In
Thailand, volunteers may teach environmental studies to
Thai
students. In Tanzania, participants work in sustainable
agriculture and
teach Bio-intensive methods of agriculture to farmers
and build
demonstration plots.
Summer
International Health Internships
Global Service Corps sponsors four summer health internship
programs in Tanzania and Thailand. The Tanzania summer
internship
is ten weeks and includes teaching HIV/AIDS prevention
at a summer
Day Camp; a community health project; and the shadowing
of doctors
and hospital personnel in health facilities. In the Thailand
summer
health internship, participants work at hospitals and
clinics where they
assist Thai health professionals and experience many facets
of the
organization depending on their interests. They also assist
with
medical procedures based on their training and experience,
and may
accompany doctors on patient visits. Participants also
offer
conversational English training to their Thai counterparts.
Through
Global Service Corps (GSC) you will be able to engage
in an
enriching, hands-on service while learning about international
health.
Additionally, you will gain a unique cross-cultural perspective
through
living with a Tanzanian or Thai family. All program expenses
are tax-
deductible and academic credit is available. To find out

> NEPAL
New International Friendship Club Nepal is an organisation
set up by
young Nepalese in 1991 to promote development and co-operation
between Nepal and the rest of the world. We organise voluntary
work
to bring help to people in need. All volunteers are welcome,
regardless
of their nationality, sex, age, or level of study. All
you need is an open
mind, plenty of good will and a basic knowledge of the
English
language. Most volunteers are young people; you can apply
through
our partner organisation in your home country or directly.
International Workcamps
Workcamps aim to promote international friendship and
co-operation
by bringing Nepalese and foreign volunteers to work together
for a
specific goal. Workcamps are organised throughout the
year in rural
areas of Nepal and you will stay in or near a village.
In just 2 weeks,
you will have the opportunity to see for yourself a different
way of life
and to help a local community.
Some
camps involve physical work to improve the situation of
a
community. You could work on an equal level with locals
and other
Nepalese to help build a path, school or playground or
help plant trees
and design public parks.
Other
camps research conditions in a rural area. You can help
raise
the awareness of villagers about certain problems (health,
education,
environment or agriculture), suggest improvements for
the local people
to make and produce a report to help the local Village
Development
Committee (local government) to use when planning for
the future
and / or seeking governmental or NGO assistance.
Some
workcamps are held in the village of Bhorle in Chitwan
district
where NIFC-Nepal has recently begun a long-term project.
The aim is
to set up a model farm growing profitable vegetable crops
to
encourage villagers to adapt traditional farming practices.
Eventually
villagers will be able to join the co-operative farm if
they wish,
contributing their land and receiving a reliable income.
Medium-term
voluntary work
Do you want to stay to experience the Nepalese way of
life? If you
have two to five months available you can do rewarding
work which will
contribute to Nepal's development.
Teaching
in a deprived rural area, either in a poorly resource
government school, or informally teaching villagers, is
a big challenge.
You will live with Nepalis. English does not need to be
your native
language, you just need to have reasonable verbal and
written skills.
Native speakers are sometimes placed in one of the hundreds
of
private schools advertising "English-medium"
education where the
standard of English is much better, easing communication
with school
staff and pupils.
