ISSUE 15 - JUNE 2001 - PART 1 OF 3

Hello, we could change the title of JAB to 'The Voluntary and Teaching Abroad Bulletin' this month, as these are the majority of available vacancies. However there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved in the summer or winter tourism industries, find a kibbutz placement, go on an expedition, fix up an au pair position, work on farms...

You are receiving this newsletter because you asked for it. Anyone can join the Jobs Abroad Bulletin at http://www.payaway.co.uk/jobs.htm

> MADAGASCAR VOLUNTARY
PIONEER MADAGASCAR - Volunteering Opportunities in Madagascar. Madagascar is one of the biologically richest yet humanly poorest countries in the world. Most plants and animals are endemic to the island and most are in danger as a result of habitat destruction. It is estimated that 96% of the island's forests have been lost, mainly due to slash-and-burn agriculture. Only 27% of the 15 million population have access to clean drinking water and the mortality rate for children under 5 is a staggering one in ten.

Pioneer Madagascar is the volunteer programme of Azafady, a registered UK-based charity (no. 107121) and Madagascar-based NGO. Through Pioneer Madagascar volunteers can experience working with a grass-roots organisation combating the problems of extensive deforestation and extreme poverty on this unique island. The programme focuses on integrated conservation and development initiatives which work closely with local people. Each scheme lasts 10 weeks, places are extremely limited and subject to a selection process. Approximately 80% of the 'minimum donation' go directly to running the projects; the remaining 20% covers your costs in-the-field. We have schemes starting in July 2001, October 2001, January 2002, April 2002 and July 2002.

During placements volunteers will learn to speak basic Malagasy and gather skills relevant to working in the fields of development, conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Our projects are led by some of the most competent conservationists and development workers on the island; they are based on communities' expressed needs and therefore provide an insight for volunteers into real on-the-ground work - they are not set up simply for volunteers. Volunteers will work on an extensive array of projects from beach surveys of endangered turtles to the building of wells in remote villages.

Azafady's conservation-based projects have been endorsed by, among others, Sir David Attenborough and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, while for our Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative we recently received the Sting and Trudie Styler Award, one of the coveted Whitley Awards for conservation.

UNA Exchange's programme of International Volunteer Projects (IVPs) includes more than 1,000 projects in Europe and North America as well as a more specialised programme of projects in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. IVPs offer you the chance to spend 2-3 weeks living and working alongside local and international volunteers on projects which improve the quality of life for local people. Volunteers work on a wide range of projects organised by local voluntary organisations including environmental conservation, children's playschemes, community festivals, schemes for people with disabilities, arts and renovation projects. We also offer a number of longer term programmes for projects between 1 and 12 months. Please contact us to get a copy of our International Projects Directory or to find out more.
