ISSUE 16 - JULY 2001 - PART 1 OF 2
Hello.
Since we began JAB, we have been using Listbot to send
you, and the other thousands of subscribers, your monthly
dose of opportunities available around the world. Listbot
have also helped to automate much of the administration
of the bulletin - a task we would have difficulty dealing
with on our own. These services have been free to us but
next month Microsoft will begin charging Listbot users
to send messages.
We
anticipate finding another free service to operate the
bulletin, so we won't be passing on any costs to you.
Neither is any action from you necessary. However, if
you encounter any admin problems with your subscription
to JAB in the next month or two, this will probably be
the reason why.
Also,
the next issue of JAB will be earlier than usual to make
use of Listbot's services one last time before we finalise
our decision of what to do next. We will keep you informed
as we learn more. In the meantime, the jobs abroad you
are after are below.
You
are receiving this newsletter because you asked for it.
Anyone can join the Jobs Abroad Bulletin at http://www.payaway.co.uk/jobs.htm
ONLINE
GUIDEBOOK
The message board system we were just starting to use
for the Online Guidebook has also begun to charge for
its services (I'm spotting a trend here) so until we find
a new home for it the OG will not be available.

ADVERTISING IN JAB
We do not charge for advertising if you are offering a
job abroad or certain jobs in the UK. To advertise here,
please post your ad (text only) by email, or as a Word

WARNING
Please be careful if you are asked to send money in advance
to an employer or an agency. Though many organisations
that advertise in JAB may require a fee (ie gap year expeditions
and voluntary organisations requiring a contribution towards
food and accommodation), it is not legal for UK employment
agencies to charge employees for job placing services
(au pair agencies are one of the few exceptions). If you
believe an advertiser in this bulletin is not playing
the game fairly, please report them to us.

board (nothing too fancy, but the basic needs will certainly
be covered), forward your visa support papers (all expenses
paid), help you arrange your travel around, in, from Russia

MADAGASCAR VOLUNTARY
PIONEER MADAGASCAR - Volunteering Opportunities in Madagascar.
Madagascar is one of the biologically richest yet humanly
poorest countries in the world. Most plants and animals
are endemic to the island and most are in danger as a
result of habitat destruction. It is estimated that 96%
of the island's forests have been lost, mainly due to
slash-and-burn agriculture. Only 27% of the 15 million
population have access to clean drinking water and the
mortality rate for children under 5 is a staggering one
in ten.
Pioneer
Madagascar is the volunteer programme of Azafady, a registered
UK-based charity (no. 107121) and Madagascar-based NGO.
Through Pioneer Madagascar volunteers can experience working
with a grass-roots organisation combating the problems
of extensive deforestation and extreme poverty on this
unique island. The programme focuses on integrated conservation
and development initiatives which work closely with local
people. Each scheme lasts 10 weeks, places are extremely
limited and subject to a selection process. Approximately
80% of the 'minimum donation' go directly to running the
projects; the remaining 20% covers your costs in-the-field.
We have schemes starting in July 2001, October 2001, January
2002, April 2002 and July 2002.
During
placements volunteers will learn to speak basic Malagasy
and gather skills relevant to working in the fields of
development, conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
Our projects are led by some of the most competent conservationists
and development workers on the island; they are based
on communities' expressed needs and therefore provide
an insight for volunteers into real on-the-ground work
- they are not set up simply for volunteers. Volunteers
will work on an extensive array of projects from beach
surveys of endangered turtles to the building of wells
in remote villages.
Azafady's
conservation-based projects have been endorsed by, among
others, Sir David Attenborough and the Royal Botanic Gardens
at Kew, while for our Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative
we recently received the Sting and Trudie Styler Award,
one of the coveted Whitley Awards for conservation.
