JAB RTW

Hello. We haven't done a great deal this month. Mostly, we've
loafed around our friends, Helen and Peter's house in Nhulunbuy,
in the Northern Territory of Australia, enjoying the comforts of
home.

Christmas dinner was fish and prawns this year. The Barramundi
we caught ourselves on a fishing trip in the Azafura Sea in Peter's
tinny - well, I didn't catch the fish, but I was in the boat when it was
landed so I consider it a moral victory over nature. A stickleback
remains the biggest fish I've ever caught. Either way it was quite
unlike the usual roast dinner we enjoy at home but a least I don't
have to slaughter a cow to fill our bellies.

In the evening we enjoyed another dinner at Mark and Natalie's
house, friends of our friends, that consisted of more hunted food:
goose and salmon. Lovely.

I could talk about food, and what you have do to get it if you don't
have a Tesco nearby, for much longer but the I-net café will close
soon, as will all the restaurants (back to food again). We're in Bali
by the way, in Kuta, not far from the wreck of Paddy's and the Sari
Club.

The bombs that devastated these establishments also devastated
business on the island too. It's not fair - the Balinese must be
among the friendliest people in the World and they do not deserve
their present fate of being a tourist Mecca with so very few tourists.

We haven't been doing too much other than eat our way around
the town as we have been catching up with work and this issue
comes accompanied by the Australia and New Zealand
Supplement that we promised last issue.

Bye,
Shane & Deirdre.

Live The American Dream. A unique 'Gap Year' opportunity from
Challenge Educational Services Ltd. The most difficult part of
organising a 'Gap Year' is choosing from the wealth of opportunities
available. What better way to gain your first taste of independence and
experience a new culture, than by living and studying in the U.S.

The Academic Year in the U.S. programme offered by Challenge
Educational Service is a unique opportunity for students to experience
the American educational system, culture and way of life from within.
Students can enrol for either a 5 or 10 month programme - and follow a
varied sporting and academic curriculum, whilst living with an
American host family.

Students are placed within small / medium sized communities, never in
large towns or cities. The communities always offer a safe and
welcoming environment. Students will receive the full support of both
the host family and a network of local and regional representatives.
Staff are fully trained and able to help students deal with any issues
they may face - such as culture shock and homesickness.

WORKING IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND =>
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Australia and New Zealand are two countries that are usually very
high up on the radar for most travellers wishing to work abroad,
especially for British backpackers. Many British and Irish have long
lost family or friends over there, they speak English, both countries
have economies that can pay decent wages and offer varied work
opportunities and they have lots and lots of sunshine to make the
work, and play, environment very pleasing.

The WORKING HOLIDAYMAKER VISA (WHM)
Australia allows citizens of the UK, Ireland, Canada, the
Netherlands, Malta, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Japan
and South Korea to apply for the Working Holidaymaker Visa. It is
a little known fact that nationals of other countries may also apply
but they will be considered on the merits of cultural exchange.
Applicants must be single (married couples without children may
also be approved), aged 18 to 30 and be approved before they
arrive in Australia.

Applicants need to show sufficient funds, around £2000, to prove
that they can support themselves in Australia and get back home
without burdening the Aussie taxpayer. The WHM Visa allows
travellers to work for up to three months in jobs of a temporary or
casual nature. After that they have to move on and find new work.
The WHM is valid for one year.

Other visas are available, or planned, that allow people to apply for
work in the sporting, entertainment and agricultural industries. You
can also work on a Student Visa with a work limitation condition.

Much of the small details of the WHM Visa changed because of
the extra temporary labour requirements for the Sydney Olympics
and may change back. For up to date information on the WHM
Visa, and other visas, consult The Department of Immigration,
Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs at www.immi.gov.au

TAX AND BANK ACCOUNTS
Before you take up a job in the lucky country you will require a Tax
File Number (TFN). Work without one and you will find yourself
paying tax at a hefty 48.5%. To apply take your passport and
another photo ID to the local tax office to get the necessary forms
and apply.

If your new home town doesn't have a tax office or you want more
information call the Australian Tax Office on 12 28 61 or visit
www.ato.gov.au They produce a "Visiting Australia - a tax guide
for working holiday makers" brochure.

Once armed with your new TFN you can begin paying tax at 29%
on weekly earnings up to A$383. Those earning an income in
Australia will need to complete an income tax return by October
31. TaxPacks for this purpose are available from newsagents.

Along with income tax you will also be paying GST of 10% on all
goods and services - just like VAT in the UK. The Tourist Refund
Scheme allows refunds on goods over A$300, purchased in the
same store within 30 days of leaving the country. Keep your
receipts. More information on the TRS is available from customs
on 1300 363 263.

Yet another form of tax is Superannuation - the money from this
goes into your retirement fund. As a visitor to Australia it is
reasonable to assume you will not be retiring in Australia and I'd
like my money back, sir, thank you very much. Luckily the tax bods
think this is a reasonable request and will give it back (less 30%).
Find out if your employer contributes to this fund, and the name of
it, while in Australia. Once back home you will need to provide a
copy of your visa and the departure stamp in your passport. Find
out more at www.ato.gov.au/super

Organisations, such as ESS Tax Refunds, can help with getting tax
refunds on income tax, Superannuation and GST. Visit
www.ess.ie/payaway for more information.

Most employers will pay your wages into a bank account so it is
advisable to get one of these early too. Take along your passport
and a few dollars to open an account and give an Australian
address. If you do not have one, give the address of your hostel,
removing the hostel's name.

WORKING IN NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand has its own one year Working Holiday Visa scheme.
WHVs are available to citizens of the UK, Ireland, Canada, France,
Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hong Kong, Japan,
South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia applying in their home
country. Around 8,000 visas are available to British people and
around 1,000 to Irish. Details differ slightly for each country and the
information given here is for applicants from the UK.

Applicants should be aged 18 to 30 and not accompanied by any
children on their visit. Funds of over NZ$4000 and onward or
homeward tickets are needed to convince the authorities you can
support yourself and are going home after your year is up
(sponsorship by a Kiwi is not accepted). When applying you will
need to show that your main reason for visiting New Zealand is to
holiday and that employment is an incidental reason for your stay.

Completed applications should be sent to the New Zealand
Immigration Service at 80 Haymarket, London SW1Y 4TE. More
information is available from New Zealand Immigration Service at
http://www.immigration.govt.nz/work/
