areas. We also require a gardener and a pool maintenance
person.

ISRAEL
Bridge In Britain / Israel Scholarships
The Middle East produces terrible images of tension, violence
and mayhem. Regular visitors to the Region can confirm
however that calm and normality prevail most of the time.
Israel
is a classic regional case study. An almost humdrum
normality is the norm in schools, universities, research
parks,
factories and farms. The populations of the country -
a
dizzying mix of Jews, ranging from the ultra-orthodox
to the
defiantly secular, dozens of denominational strands of
Christians, Moslems, Bahais, Druses and Samaritans - live
out
their lives, in their markedly different traditions, largely
in
conditions of co-existence and mutual tolerance.
The
Bridge in Britain scholarship scheme run by Friends of
Israel Educational Foundation provides 12 award winners
with
the opportunity to spend six months immersed in this area.
The next programme will run from January to late July
2007.
12 British school leavers will spend five months working
in a
variety of placements within Israel; and a further month
travelling independently through Israel, the PA, Jordan
and
Egypt. The work placements are in both rural and urban
Israel,
both in the desert south and the fertile north of the
country;
and in a variety of different communities and cultures
within

Placements
by definition are demanding. The Foundation
expects all participants to make their mark on their hosts

all projects.
The

discover the peoples, cultures, aspirations and the many
problems of the area. It's an unforgettable experience.

MADAGASCAR
Does the idea of volunteering for a grass-roots charity
on the
Great Red Island inspire you? Then join Azafady in
Madagascar for a life changing experience, and contribute
to
the conservation and development of one of the world's
biologically richest countries.
Madagascar is recognised as one of the planet's top
conservation priorities. 80% of the island's plant and
animal
species are found nowhere else in the world, but poverty
poses an enormous and immediate threat to the island's
staggering biodiversity, not least through deforestation
for
subsistence agriculture. Many unique species currently
face
extinction, while many others have already become extinct.
By joining the Pioneer scheme run by Azafady, you can
make
a real difference, while enjoying the breathtaking beauty
of one
of the most remote regions on the Earth. With a team of
like-
minded volunteers, you will take part in our vital frontline
conservation research, and play an active role in our
health,
education and sustainable livelihoods schemes. In
collaboration with village communities, you will be involved
in
an extensive range of projects led by highly qualified
staff:
building wells and pharmacies, monitoring lemur and bird
species, studying endemic plants of the precious remaining
forests, or raising awareness of hygiene and health among
local children.
The chance to meet new people and gain work experience
will
give your CV that extra something. But more than that,
the
Pioneer scheme will give you a fresh outlook on life.

RSPB Residential Volunteering Scheme. If you are interested
in birds and conservation, here is your opportunity to
help our
conservation work, gain practical work experience, meet
new
people, or enjoy a working holiday whilst making good
use of
your spare time.
This
Scheme operates on 40 reserves around the UK. The
work varies from season to season, and from reserve to
reserve, but physical management tasks are an important
aspect on most sites, so you will need to be physically
fit. You
will not need special skills for most of the volunteering
opportunities, but you must have a genuine interest in
and
enthusiasm for birds and wildlife conservation and be
happy
working as part of a team. A good level of conversational
English is essential as part of the work will involve
talking to
visitors.
Anyone
over 18 is eligible to take part. Bookings start and
finish on a Saturday and can be for a week or more.
Volunteers need to organise and pay for their own travel
to
and from the reserve, and to provide and cover the cost
of
their own food during their stay. The RSPB will provide
accommodation free of charge.

Volunteer Latin America. The Humpback Whale visits the
coast of Brazil yearly from the 1st July to 30th November.
During these 5 months the project offers internships on
a full-
season basis coinciding with the whales' presence in the
region. Interns participate actively in all the tasks
undertaken
by the technical staff of the project, rotating among
survey
cruises, continent-based work and periods at the Abrolhos
Archipelago. Interns should be undergraduate and graduate
students in the fields of Biology, Oceanography, Veterinary
Medicine and other related areas.
Although
this may sound like a perfect nature viewing vacation
they point out that this trip requires many hours of serious
work
from everyone on land and/or while in the ocean. Despite
this
fact, this is a truly magical opportunity to get involved

MEXICO
Among the Mayan People of Mexico. Global Vision
International is pleased to launch a new expedition focusing
on
community education and sustainable development in the
stunning Mayan Riviera in Mexico. Expedition members are
urgently required to join the GVI team starting from April
2005
to assist in a variety of sustainable development initiatives,
teach English and increase awareness of the impacts of
tourism on local culture and resources among the Mayan
community.
This
is an excellent opportunity to learn about sustainable
development, increase your knowledge of Spanish and be
part
of the Mayan community in a beautiful area - one of the
top 10
beaches in the world!
Due
to pressure spreading down the coast from the tourism
mecca of Cancun, the local Mayan community is finding
both
its culture and its natural resources increasingly under
pressure. The expedition supports the efforts of GVI's
local
partners to increase the long term benefits of tourism
to the
local population.
Expedition
members will receive teacher training to become
certified TEFL teachers. There will be ample opportunity
to
increase their knowledge of Spanish and learn limited
Mayan
while immersing themselves in the surrounding community.
Activities include; English language lessons, providing
information on the area's natural resources and local
flora and
fauna, sustainable development seminars, and assisting
in the
creation of sustainable, locally run businesses.
Global
Vision International is now looking to recruit participants
for the advance expedition starting in April 2005 and
for future
expeditions running thereafter for periods of 5 - 20 weeks.
Prior background knowledge in teaching techniques and
some
basic Spanish is an advantage, although not essential
as GVI
provides a comprehensive training programme. Those
interested in taking part should call Chris Ash on 0870
