JAB RTW

Hello. After finishing the Australia and New Zealand Supplement
and Tramp News last month, we treated ourselves to seeing
something of Bali. Dragging ourselves away from the coast, for the
first time since Rotorua in New Zealand, we headed inland to
Ubud, the cultural centre of Bali. Highlights included forest
monkeys and Balinese dancing, including some vigorous
firewalking, performed by a religious group that included our
homestay owner.

My camera, as usual, quit on me during the dancing, only to work
again seconds after the performance ended but plenty of cheeky
monkeys were caught in megapixels; including a tiny one that
chose to attack anything four times its size while its mother held on
to its tail. It reminded us a little of our favourite pub back home
(leave it Dave - he ain't worth it).

Dee managed to pick up quite the impressive collection of bruises
in Bali. After falling down a drain, covered by rainwater from one of
the daily downpours, she fell off a bicycle and was fortunate not to
go over a cliff. A monkey ran off with her bag too.

We reluctantly said goodbye to Bali and all the Weyann's, Madi's
Joman's and Kutut's (the four names everyone on the Island, male
or female, is given) and flew to the Asian mainland, to Bangkok.

Chinese New Year wasn't the best time to arrive and after getting
knocked back by several hostels, and assisting a drunk Spanish
robbery victim, we decided to drink to well past dawn with a French
Canadian and a Swede. Similar nights followed including a pool
party without a pool.

It's too early to say if we like Thailand as we haven't left Bangkok
yet. The Khao San Road is good for vibrant boozy fun, the river is
a great way to travel and the Wats impress. However the "land of
the smiles" seems in reality a triumph of good press relations,
we're living in a cupboard and we've encountered as many con
men and theft victims in one week than in the past eight months.

We'll have plenty of time to make up our minds as we'll be in and
out of Thailand several times before we fly home. We were due to
visit Cambodia but because of uncertainty over the border situation
we've decided to postpone that for a couple of months. Instead,
we're off to some islands today for a bit of sun and fresh air before
heading to Malaysia and Sumatra.

Bye,
Shane & Deirdre.

TEACHING & TEFL =>

> ROMANIA
English teachers wanted by Romania's street paper, SPUNE
Romania's street paper, SPUNE, is looking for two teachers of English
as a foreign language to spend three months in Romania teaching
English to a small ecumenical group from a dozen different countries.
The location is the 'cultural capital' of Romania, the university city of
Iasi (pr. Yash) in the north east of the country.

SPUNE's British editor has taught on this course the past two years,
and guarantees an interesting and satisfying experience. The teachers
will also have the opportunity to be involved in SPUNE's work with the
homeless and poor people of the city. There might be the opportunity
to organise a basic beginners' English course for them should the
teachers wish, which could considerably increase opportunities to sell
the street paper to foreign tourists and thus increase their income.

There are no living expenses, as the teachers will be comfortably
accommodated at the Ecumenical Institute with all meals provided.
They would also be paid, very well by Romanian standards (about 7
Euro/hour - to put this in perspective a 1lb loaf of bread costs about
0.20 Euro or 13p), and have the opportunity to take part in various
cultural activities and excursions with the students. They would be
expected to teach not more than 20 hours/week. However, they would
have to cover their own return travel to Iasi (from Romania the
cheapest return flights are with Czech Airlines, via Prague). No visa is
now required for British citizens to visit Romania.

The English course runs from 18 March to 21 May 2003, but the
teachers will be asked to arrive one week in advance to accommodate
to Romania. Teachers will have the opportunity to extend their stay
after 21 May should they wish.

Manuals, audio aids, video and other facilities are all provided in a
pleasant, modern teaching environment and there is a very good
British Council English library close by. The students will already have
a working knowledge of English (about lower intermediate level) and
the aim of the course is to considerably improve their speaking,
listening and writing skills.

Though not essential, it would be appropriate for the teachers to have
some religious motive as the course is specifically for young people
(between 18 and about 30) who are involved in the church, and usually
some kind of social or pastoral work, in their own countries. However,
the range of faiths among the students will be wide, including various
protestant churches such as Presbyterian, Methodist, Lutheran and
Baptist, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Muslim. The course is
sponsored by the World Council of Churches.

Requirements: Teachers should be native English speakers with at
least a TEFL or TESOL level qualification; Be well acquainted with
modern communicative methodology; An additional unqualified teacher
may also be considered to lead free conversation sessions.
Letters of application, with a detailed CV, should be e-mailed to
spune@mail.dntis.ro as soon as possible.

Notes: Spune is a street paper - like The Big Issue. Sold by homeless
and marginalised people - helping themselves out of poverty. For more
information on International Street Papers, please visit
www.bis-international.org or www.street-papers.org Nationalities
required: Native English speaker - no visa required for UK nationals
(please check for other nationalities).

> SOUTH AFRICA
Conservation / Mini Venture
Land of the Big Five - lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant and rhino -
South Africa is a magnificent region that sweeps from the
coastlines of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, through vast
grasslands and bush to epic Table Mountain in Cape Town.
Sweeping the nation also is the post-apartheid optimism that
makes today an exciting time to visit.

Thick Amazonian rainforest and summits of the Cordillera
mountain range are what glue people to Bolivia. Likewise, the
bizarre witches' relics of the markets, lakes of pink flamingoes and
a direct spit from a llama on the trail round Lake Titicaca are
curiosities to transfix anyone in this poor yet bewitching nation.

Lapped by the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, this land of

South America, besieged by naturalists still trying to fathom its
geology and cloud forests, its turtles, orchids and butterflies.

South America's Utopia, where the howler monkey's cry pierces
the mist shrouding the palm trees, Ecuador is lost in its own jungle.
Here are some of the last patches of rainforest on Earth, almost a
hundred snow-capped volcanoes and a bewildering array of plants

Our volunteers work in groups, based in the tree-lined, sunny
capital of Accra. Teaching English is aside from getting involved
with arts, music, crafts and sports, and is as hectic as seeing to the
needs of 400 patients a day as part of a medical student's
placement. On a Media i-Venture, programming and news
reporting are as fulfilling as hitting the streets to interview the
public about their views.

Armed with merely a chalkboard and a few books, our volunteers
teach English to the needy adults and children of Sri Lanka, in

Others work with a grassroots network to develop Eco-tourism

are short, sharp and memorable, giving skills and expanding the
