JAB - THE JOBS ABROAD BULLETIN
A Monthly Bulletin for Finding Jobs Abroad,
Working Holidays and Gap Year Opportunities
===================================

ISSUE 11 - FEBRUARY 2001 - PART 1 OF 3

Hello, as promised JAB is earlier this month and we've worked especially hard to introduce to you a wide range of new employers. Show them what you can do for them and hopefully you'll be whisked away from the cold and wet asap. As an added bonus, in our first ever competition, we have 15 pairs of tickets to the ITW Show to give away (details below).

JAB is just a bit too big for Listbot's (the guys that enable us to run the bulletin) boots this month so, at the last minute, we've had to split it into three. New Jobs are in Parts 1 & 2, while Part 3 features organisations that have indicated to us they are still recruiting from the last issue.

You are receiving this newsletter because you asked for it. Anyone can join the Jobs Abroad Bulletin at http://www.payaway.co.uk/jobs.htm

Trees for Life is helping to pioneer the emerging discipline of ecological restoration, and working to restore a wild native forest to the Scottish Highlands.

The majority of our practical work is done by volunteers who join our work weeks in the Highlands every spring and autumn. The dates for the 2001 work weeks have now been published and we are again looking for people to participate in ecological restoration work in the Scottish Highlands. Volunteers form part of groups of up to 10 participants and two experienced leaders. Weeks start every Saturday from 17 March to 2 June and from 1 September to 20 October. Work includes native tree planting, erecting stock fences around riparian tree regeneration, tree nursery work, fence removal and removing non-native conifers from where these have been planted or have seeded into native woodland, in Glen Affric, Glen Carron and Glen Moriston. UK VOLUNTARY WORK
Voluntary Work at the Monkey Sanctuary. The Monkey Sanctuary accepts applications for volunteer work from people of all nationalities.

General Information: The Monkey Sanctuary is home to a colony of woolly monkeys, established in 1964 as a refuge for ex-pet and ex-zoo woolly monkeys. The Sanctuary received recognition as the first place where this beautiful species of monkey bred outside its own habitat in the South American rainforests. The Sanctuary is open to the public during the summer months. The care of the monkeys is in the hands of an experienced team of people. As a conservation and educational unit run by a small community, the Sanctuary attracts people of varied backgrounds and interests. The Sanctuary team share concern for animal welfare, conservation and global political issues. The Sanctuary is not a scientific centre, rather, a community of people working to better the captive life of the primate community here.

Volunteers: Over the course of a year, the Sanctuary receives several dozen people for voluntary work, with up to seven staying at any one time. First time volunteers are booked in for either two, three or four weeks. Sometimes placements can be extended, depending on requirements at the time. Usually a few people each year stay for longer periods, often people who have volunteered before and wish to return. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to stay in the house. Younger volunteers are accepted, but have to arrange their own accommodation. Volunteers need a workable knowledge of the English language. No qualifications are needed - volunteers usually come because they share a concern for animal welfare, conservation and the need to question people's attitude to other animals.

Voluntary Work: All year - Volunteers join the Sanctuary team in cleaning monkey territory, preparing monkey food, domestic help, gardening, street collecting and general maintenance. Summer - The Sanctuary is open to the public from Easter to the end of September. During these times volunteers help in various ways: serving in the Sanctuary's vegetarian cafe, and sweeping paths and public areas. Winter: From October to Easter, most work is in the grounds and gardens including monkey territory maintenance. Volunteers help with building, repairing and painting territory structures, management of wildlife friendly areas of the gardens and maintenance of the house and grounds. Volunteers do not work directly with the monkeys under any circumstances. Keepers spend many months learning to recognise not only each individual monkey but also their personalities and the group dynamics.

Financials: Volunteers pay £35.00* weekly towards the cost of accommodation and food. (*£25.00 students / £15.00 unwaged)

Accommodation and transport: Volunteers live in with the Sanctuary team, sharing a room with other volunteers. Food is provided and is vegetarian. We are unable to help with travel costs. The summer holiday period is very popular, and is therefore often fully booked months in advance.

For further information, write to: Mike Brown at The Monkey Sanctuary, Looe, Cornwall, PL13 1NZ (Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope with correspondence requiring a reply) or e-mail monkey_sanctuary_uk@compuserve.com The Sanctuary has a website at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/monkey_sanctuary_uk/

INTERNATIONAL WORKCAMPS
pro international e.V., Bahnhofstraße 26 A, 35037 Marburg, Germany. Telefon:  (06421) 65277. Fax: 64407

eMail: pro-international@lahn.net http://www.pro-international.de We offer: International Workcamps, duration: 2 - 3 weeks, between March and November.

The Principle of Workcamps: Workcamps are always  voluntary and without payment ! They are international and organise themselves. Working  together within the group for a common aim is an absolutely vital component of every workcamp. What actually 'happens' in a workcamp depends largely on each individual.

The Aim: We see in the international workcamp the possibility for young people to exchange experiences and to learn more about other social, cultural and political living conditions. We hope they come to an understanding of people from various countries by living together in an international group.

The Group: Young people from 16-26, mostly school-goers or students with very varied back-grounds and interests. Usually one meets participants from 5 - 10 different countries, mainly from Europe, but also from other continents in a workcamp.

The Board and Lodging: The groups live mostly in simple accommodation, in youth hostels, schools, huts and empty houses, sometimes in tents. The accommodation has only basic furniture, beds, mattresses, blankets etc. and equipment for self-catering. Board and lodging is free in all workcamps.

The Work: The work (5-6 hours daily) from Monday to Friday should encourage people to get to know each other by working towards a common goal and simultaneously providing a real service. The work requires no previous knowledge or experience, e.g. renovating playgrounds, ecology, care of parks, supervision of children etc.

The Free Time: As much as possible this should be spent together in the group and can be used to get to know the country in more ways than as a usual tourist. Excursions together, visits to museums and other places of interest are just a few suggestions. There should as will be enough room for each individual to follow his or her particular interest or need.

The Fee: The registration fee is 100,00 DM and has to be paid/transferred together with the application via bank, Credit-card or Euro-cheque.

The Programme: You will find all details about our programme on our website www.pro-international.de

GERMANY FARM WORK
Farmhands needed to live and work on farms and estates, looking after guests children, working in on-site shops and restaurants, and caring for horses and other animals.6+ weeks Ages 18+ 36 hour week, one day free, pocket money DM 300,-- a month and full board host family accommodation provided. AUSTRIA AGRICULTURE
WWOOF Austria - Do you want to get into the countryside, to help the organic movement, to see Austria, to travel cheaply, to learn German (most of the farmers speak English too), to meet interesting people, to live and help as family thus learning about the hows and whys of organic farming? Then come to know organic agriculture and to meet other people, help on organic farms and receive food and accommodation in return. Then WWOOF, that's for you!

WWOOF- an Exchange - WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) is a form of cultural exchange. WWOOF-farmers open their doors for interested people of other countries and cultures. One farmer said: "We have to stay on our farm, by WWOOF we bring the world into our house.... a fresh breeze blows through the farm". The farmer provides free food and accommodation in exchange for your help.

How it works - After payment of the membership fee of ATS 250/US-$ 25/DM 35 (cheques only in Austrian Shillings for EU-people, from anywhere else only cash) + 2 IRC, you will receive the farmlist. Now you can choose "your" farm(s) yourself according to your interests and make your own arrangements to help. WWOOFing is not a job, WWOOFing is a working vacation. You come as a traveller and need your own travel-insurance, but you don't need a labour permit. During the stay on an Austrian WWOOF-farm only WWOOF-members have an insurance against accidents. As you are a guest on the farm it is necessary to make an appointment, otherwise the farmer can send you away. You are free to change farms, to have new experiences and to see other regions of our country. The volunteering should not be exploitive of either WWOOFer or the host.

History - In the early seventies the London secretary Sue Coppard wanted to spend her weekends on an organic farm and this was the idea : WWOOF was born. 18 months later she needed four more people to help with the administration. WWOOF Austria started in 1996 with financial and moral support from WWOOF Germany.

The Farmlist - In our illustrated farmlist there are more than 100 farms from all over Austria representing the whole range of farming interests. Our farmers are nice, open people, who enjoy to meet guests from all over the world and to spend the time with them, showing them the surrounding countryside, meeting friends, dancing at a farmer's wedding, hiking and having fun together. Remember that they also need much time and energy to instruct you and they will expect your interest and good will to help with and learn about organic farming. WWOOF-hosts live a simple sustainable lifestyle and sometimes at first it is not easy to share it. In the farmlist there are only organic farmers and they use different kinds of agriculture like permakulture, bio-dynamic, other organic systems. Austria is famous for its organic farms. Because of our country's geography with mountains and hills there are many small, but very successful farms. In Austria we have more than half of the organic farms from the whole European Union.

Austria, the country - Small, but beautiful - this is our country in the heart of Europe. Within an area of no more than 83.854 square km Austria harbours an abundance of sights and adventures just waiting to be discovered. Austria consists of 9 provinces, which are completely different in their scenic and cultural attractions. Come and see it for yourself!
