JAB
RTW
Hello.
We've begun to get off our butts and go places rather
than
just eating and drinking our way around the pubs, restaurants
and
clubs of Cusco. The cosy apartment with a heater has been
replaced by hostels again and Deirdre has left South American
Explorers but still pops in to help out and blag lunch.
We
have recently returned from the Inca trail: described,
accurately in our view, in Lonely Planet as "the
Inca Trial." Perhaps
the four day trail was a bit ambitious for our first ever
hike. We're
hardly ancient, but we felt as old as the ruins themselves
as we
puffed and panted our way up and down the mountains, lagging
behind the eight young, experienced hikers that made up
our
group. Next time we hike, it'll be with a group of fat
old people -
and I'll leave my cigarettes at home.
Machu
Picchu is worth it though; It's a fabulous place to poke
around and one could spend days investigating all the
nooks and
crannies of the site or taking in the views.
In
an hour or two we will get on a bus to the Bolivian town
of
Copacabana, to visit the islands on Lake Titicaca and
get out of
Peru before our stamp runs out on Saturday.
Cusco
is beginning to feel a little like home whenever we come
back from somewhere and we will be back again in a few
weeks to
do some much needed maintenance on the website before
heading to La Paz. Speaking of site business, I had hoped
to do a
Latin America Supplement this month for JAB but it'll
have to wait
now until the September issue as time has caught up with
us
again.
Adios,
Shane & Deirdre.

PERU
Picaflor Research Centre, Tambopata, Peru. Picaflor Research
Centre is a remote biological field station in the Peruvian
rainforest,
established to encourage research and promote conservation
in an
area of outstanding biological interest. Picaflor Research
Centre is
located over 70km up the Tambopata river from the nearest
town,
Puerto Maldonado. There is no road access to the centre;
all
transport is by motorised canoe.
To
stay at Picaflor Research Centre: RESEARCHERS pay 20 USD
per
night for food and accommodation at PRC. Please contact
us
well in advance of your proposed project starting date
- we can
help with project planning and licence applications.
VOLUNTEERS:
This is the cheapest way to stay at PRC; to be
eligible for this cheap rate, volunteers agree to stay
for a minimum
of 10 nights at PRC, and to work for us for 3 hours a
day. The rest
of the time is your own to enjoy birdwatching, exploring
local forest
trails, relaxing in a hammock..
Volunteer
work at Picaflor Research Centre is varied and can be
arranged to suit your particular interests and abilities;
no previous
experience is necessary. Volunteer work could include
clearing
trails, varnishing buildings, tropical gardening, helping
ongoing
projects or be part of our 'sustainable living in the
rainforest'
programme. Contact us to find out what we're working on
or to
suggest your own project.
The
10 night initial programme costs 400 S/.; you can stay
for
additional nights at 35 S/. (approximately 10 USD). This
covers
your food and accommodation when at PRC. Volunteers need
to
arrange their own Park entry tickets and transport to
and from
Puerto Maldonado to PRC.
Long
stay volunteers may be offered special rates on day
excursions or camping trips - see the website for excursion
details.
Additional
information for Volunteers and Birdwatchers: Volunteers
and birdwatchers need to make their own arrangements to
get to
PRC - please read the following:
To
get to Picaflor Research Centre: Flights to Puerto Maldonado
are available from Lima and Cusco. From Puerto Maldonado,
taxi-
boats leave the Tambopata river port (Puerto Tambopata)
early
mornings, at no fixed time. Enquire at the river port
on arrival in
Puerto Maldonado for the next departure- ask for boats
to Picaflor
Research Centre or la casa de Pico. Typical cost for the
journey is
10 soles per person, including all your luggage- pay on
the boat,
never in advance. The taxi-boat takes up to 10 hours to
get to
Picaflor Research Centre, and is usually full of local
people, so it´s
a good idea to go early to secure your place. You may
like to take
some snack food to share with other passangers during
the
journey.
On
your journey up-river you need to stop for a few minutes
at the
La Torre check point (puesto de control) to register your
entry to
the protected forest area. Ask the guy who collects the
money on
the boat to arrange for the taxi to stop and wait for
you at the check
point; taxis do not usually stop there unless requested.
There
are usually several boats a week which could give you
a lift
to PRC from Puerto Maldonado, but there is no guarantee
that
there will be a boat on the day you wish to travel. You
should
therefore be prepared for the possibility of staying additional
nights
in Puerto Maldonado on your way to PRC.
Similarly,
for the return journey from PRC to Puerto Maldonado,
you need to catch a taxi-boat. There are usually several
boats a
week making the return journey, but there is no guarantee
that
there
will be a boat on your prefered day of travel. You may
therefore require additional nights at PRC (-charged at
the
standard daily rate for volunteers or birdwatchers, as
appropriate.)
Volunteers
should note that their 10 night programme starts on the
day they arrive at PRC. Travellers on a tight schedule
may find it
more appropriate to come on the birdwatchers programme
which
has no minimum stay, or take a tourist tour with transport
included.
National
Park Entrance Fees: To stay at Picaflor Research Centre
you need permission from the Puerto Maldonado office of
INRENA
(Instituto Nacional de Recursos Naturales). Their office
is at
Fonavie H-10, on Av. Madre de Dios- a green and yellow
building
behind a wooden fence, on a corner opposite a Llamagas
store.
8.30am- 1:00pm, 3:30pm- 6:00pm (not Sundays) (Take a 2
seater
motorkar taxi for 1.50 S/. From the town centre).
You
should first arrange your boat transport, then go to the
INRENA office and explain to the official who issues park
tickets
that you want to go to Picaflor as a volunteer, or as
a tourist if you
are coming on the birdwatching programme. He will need
to know
the dates you are traveling and who you are going with
(which
boat). You should then be issued with a written permit
and a 10
soles ticket, which you should present at the La Torre
check point
on your journey up-river.
To
arrange your stay: Please contact us by e-mail as far
in
advance as possible, as places are limited. At present
our e-mail
access is limited and delays of a couple of weeks or more
are
possible before you get a reply. If you are already in
Peru and
would like to arrange a visit at short notice, we can
be contacted by
radio from Cusco or Puerto Maldonado. The frequency is
6702.0
USB Picaflor, 10.00-10.30am ans 5.30-6.00pm
Payment
at PRC. Please bring the correct amount in soles and pay
on arrival. You may want to bring some extra cash for
the bar,
souvenirs or excursions; remember to have some reserve
cash in
case you require additional nights at PRC at the end of
your stay.
Not
included in the daily rate- transport, guided tours, National
Park entrance fees or insurance.

NEPAL
Teach English as a Foreign Language / Mini Venture
The capital, Kathmandu, is mind-boggling as cars overtake
carts
and travellers log-on in Internet cafés. Being
a volunteer means
teaching English to children in state-supported schools
with sport
and singing thrown in, or teaching English to monks in
a few of the
largest Buddhist monasteries in the city.
