ISSUE 17 - AUGUST 2001 - PART 1 OF 3

Hello. As we mentioned last month, Listbot, the service that we use to administrate and send JAB to you is withdrawing its free service. While we're switching to a new system there may be a few problems over the next couple of days with joining and leaving the Jobs Abroad Bulletin. Once we've settled on and tested our new list service we will send you all a quick note about the new joining and leaving procedures. After that it should be business as usual.

You are receiving this newsletter because you asked for it. Anyone can join the Jobs Abroad Bulletin at http://www.payaway.co.uk/jobs.htm

> MADAGASCAR VOLUNTARY
PIONEER MADAGASCAR - Volunteering Opportunities in Madagascar. Madagascar is one of the biologically richest yet humanly poorest countries in the world. Most plants and animals are endemic to the island and most are in danger as a result of habitat destruction. It is estimated that 96% of the island's forests have been lost, mainly due to slash-and-burn agriculture. Only 27% of the 15 million population have access to clean drinking water and the mortality rate for children under 5 is a staggering one in ten.

Pioneer Madagascar is the volunteer programme of Azafady, a registered UK-based charity (no. 107121) and Madagascar-based NGO. Through Pioneer Madagascar volunteers can experience working with a grass-roots organisation combating the problems of extensive deforestation and extreme poverty on this unique island. The programme focuses on integrated conservation and development initiatives which work closely with local people. Each scheme lasts 10 weeks, places are extremely limited and subject to a selection process. Approximately 80% of the ‘minimum donation’ go directly to running the projects; the remaining 20% covers your costs in-the-field. We have schemes starting in October 2001, January 2002, April 2002 and July 2002.

During placements volunteers will learn to speak basic Malagasy and gather skills relevant to working in the fields of development, conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Our projects are led by some of the most competent conservationists and development workers on the island; they are based on communities' expressed needs and therefore provide an insight for volunteers into real on-the-ground work - they are not set up simply for volunteers. Volunteers will work on an extensive array of projects from beach surveys of endangered turtles to the building of wells in remote villages.

Azafady's conservation-based projects have been endorsed by, among others, Sir David Attenborough and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, while for our Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative we recently received the Sting and Trudie Styler Award, one of the coveted Whitley Awards for conservation.

WORKING HOLIDAYS - A NATURAL BREAK.
A Working Holiday offers you the chance to meet and spend a week with ten or twelve other volunteers while undertaking important practical conservation work. No previous experience is required as full training is given. The group meets in Belfast on the first day and travels to the venue together. Work begins the next day and continues through the week with one day off for sightseeing. The work usually lasts from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. with lunch and tea breaks but the leader will make sure that you are not overdoing it. The evenings present lots of opportunities for enjoying the local social life. Costs of Working Holidays range from £69 - £99 inclusive of food and accommodation. It is not necessary to become a member to attend a Natural Break. You must be over 18. You need to bring your own working clothes and waterproofs: everything else, including insurance (while work-ing only), and return transport to Belfast, is covered in the holiday price. A full list of what to bring, where to meet etc., will be sent to you with confirmation of your booking.

*Old Colin Woodland, Co. Antrim, 18 – 25 August.  Accom: Green Park Lodge. Cost £69. Work: Access. Old Colin Woodland has been managed by CVNI for 12 years.  It is a beautiful tranquil mature woodland, situated on the greenbelt overlooking Belfast.  It nestles on the southern slopes of the Colin Mountain and is used as an educational resource by the local community.  This week’s project is to improve access to the area by establishing a network of paths.  Accommodation is the very comfortable Green Park Lodge on the outskirts of Belfast.

* A Caving Combination, Co. Fermanagh, 25 Aug – 1 Sept. Accom: Coachman’s House. Cost £99. Work: Pathwork and Caving. Combine worthwhile conservation work in the “Lake District” of N. Ireland, with three days exploring Lough Erne and the surrounding countryside.  The work will be repairing Footpaths on the Ulster Way. Qualified cavers will show you some of the best underground systems in the UK.  Accommodation is provided in our centre on the shores of Lower Lough Erne.  Your day off may be spent exploring the Fermanagh and Cavan Mountains.  Hire of all equipment and insurance for canoeing is included in the cost.

* Exploring Lough Erne, Co. Fermanagh, 1 – 8 September. Accom: Coachman’s House. Cost £99. Work: Pathwork and canoeing. > UK VOLUNTARY WORK
Voluntary Work at the Monkey Sanctuary. The Monkey Sanctuary accepts applications for volunteer work from people of all nationalities.

General Information: The Monkey Sanctuary is home to a colony of woolly monkeys, established in 1964 as a refuge for ex-pet and ex-zoo woolly monkeys. The Sanctuary received recognition as the first place where this beautiful species of monkey bred outside its own habitat in the South American rainforests. The Sanctuary is open to the public during the summer months. The care of the monkeys is in the hands of an experienced team of people. As a conservation and educational unit run by a small community, the Sanctuary attracts people of varied backgrounds and interests. The Sanctuary team share concern for animal welfare, conservation and global political issues. The Sanctuary is not a scientific centre, rather, a community of people working to better the captive life of the primate community here.

Volunteers: Over the course of a year, the Sanctuary receives several dozen people for voluntary work, with up to seven staying at any one time. First time volunteers are booked in for either two, three or four weeks. Sometimes placements can be extended, depending on requirements at the time. Usually a few people each year stay for longer periods, often people who have volunteered before and wish to return. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to stay in the house. Younger volunteers are accepted, but have to arrange their own accommodation. Volunteers need a workable knowledge of the English language. No qualifications are needed - volunteers usually come because they share a concern for animal welfare, conservation and the need to question people's attitude to other animals.

Voluntary Work: All year - Volunteers join the Sanctuary team in cleaning monkey territory, preparing monkey food, domestic help, gardening, street collecting and general maintenance. Summer - The Sanctuary is open to the public from Easter to the end of September. During these times volunteers help in various ways: serving in the Sanctuary's vegetarian cafe, and sweeping paths and public areas. Winter: From October to Easter, most work is in the grounds and gardens including monkey territory maintenance. Volunteers help with building, repairing and painting territory structures, management of wildlife friendly areas of the gardens and maintenance of the house and grounds. Volunteers do not work directly with the monkeys under any circumstances. Keepers spend many months learning to recognise not only each individual monkey but also their personalities and the group dynamics.

Financials: Volunteers pay £35.00* weekly towards the cost of accommodation and food. (*£25.00 students / £15.00 unwaged)

VSO is an international development charity that works through volunteers. VSO enables people aged 21-68 to share their skills and experience with communities and organisations across the developing world. Placements are in education, health, natural resources, technical trades, engineering, business, communications and social development. Over 1,900 volunteers work in 74 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and the Pacific. It is a rare privilege to be able to live and work alongside people in differing countries, sharing skills and looking at challenges from very varied perspectives. Most VSO volunteers feel that they learn more than they are able to give and all agree that it is a life-enhancing experience.

VSO placements are mostly for two years and you need to be qualified and usually have 18 months post-qualification work experience. There are also placements for newly qualified graduates prepared to teach Maths, Sciences, English and shorter placements on VSO youth programmes for those aged 17-25. VSO placements are fully funded: fares, insurances, grants, accommodation, modest living allowance, medical cover and pension contributions are all provided.
