ISSUE 17 - AUGUST 2001 - PART 1 OF 3
Hello.
As we mentioned last month, Listbot, the service that
we use to administrate and send JAB to you is withdrawing
its free service. While we're switching to a new system
there may be a few problems over the next couple of days
with joining and leaving the Jobs Abroad Bulletin. Once
we've settled on and tested our new list service we will
send you all a quick note about the new joining and leaving
procedures. After that it should be business as usual.
You
are receiving this newsletter because you asked for it.

MADAGASCAR VOLUNTARY
PIONEER MADAGASCAR - Volunteering Opportunities in Madagascar.
Madagascar is one of the biologically richest yet humanly
poorest countries in the world. Most plants and animals
are endemic to the island and most are in danger as a
result of habitat destruction. It is estimated that 96%
of the island's forests have been lost, mainly due to
slash-and-burn agriculture. Only 27% of the 15 million
population have access to clean drinking water and the
mortality rate for children under 5 is a staggering one
in ten.
Pioneer
Madagascar is the volunteer programme of Azafady, a registered
UK-based charity (no. 107121) and Madagascar-based NGO.
Through Pioneer Madagascar volunteers can experience working
with a grass-roots organisation combating the problems
of extensive deforestation and extreme poverty on this
unique island. The programme focuses on integrated conservation
and development initiatives which work closely with local
people. Each scheme lasts 10 weeks, places are extremely
limited and subject to a selection process. Approximately
80% of the ‘minimum donation’ go directly to running the
projects; the remaining 20% covers your costs in-the-field.
We have schemes starting in October 2001, January 2002,
April 2002 and July 2002.
During
placements volunteers will learn to speak basic Malagasy
and gather skills relevant to working in the fields of
development, conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
Our projects are led by some of the most competent conservationists
and development workers on the island; they are based
on communities' expressed needs and therefore provide
an insight for volunteers into real on-the-ground work
- they are not set up simply for volunteers. Volunteers
will work on an extensive array of projects from beach
surveys of endangered turtles to the building of wells
in remote villages.
Azafady's
conservation-based projects have been endorsed by, among
others, Sir David Attenborough and the Royal Botanic Gardens
at Kew, while for our Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative
we recently received the Sting and Trudie Styler Award,
one of the coveted Whitley Awards for conservation.

UK VOLUNTARY WORK
Voluntary Work at the Monkey Sanctuary. The Monkey Sanctuary
accepts applications for volunteer work from people of
all nationalities.
General
Information: The Monkey Sanctuary is home to a colony
of woolly monkeys, established in 1964 as a refuge for
ex-pet and ex-zoo woolly monkeys. The Sanctuary received
recognition as the first place where this beautiful species
of monkey bred outside its own habitat in the South American
rainforests. The Sanctuary is open to the public during
the summer months. The care of the monkeys is in the hands
of an experienced team of people. As a conservation and
educational unit run by a small community, the Sanctuary
attracts people of varied backgrounds and interests. The
Sanctuary team share concern for animal welfare, conservation
and global political issues. The Sanctuary is not a scientific
centre, rather, a community of people working to better
the captive life of the primate community here.
Volunteers:
Over the course of a year, the Sanctuary receives several
dozen people for voluntary work, with up to seven staying
at any one time. First time volunteers are booked in for
either two, three or four weeks. Sometimes placements
can be extended, depending on requirements at the time.
Usually a few people each year stay for longer periods,
often people who have volunteered before and wish to return.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older to stay in the house.
Younger volunteers are accepted, but have to arrange their
own accommodation. Volunteers need a workable knowledge
of the English language. No qualifications are needed
- volunteers usually come because they share a concern
for animal welfare, conservation and the need to question
people's attitude to other animals.
Voluntary
Work: All year - Volunteers join the Sanctuary team in
cleaning monkey territory, preparing monkey food, domestic
help, gardening, street collecting and general maintenance.
Summer - The Sanctuary is open to the public from Easter
to the end of September. During these times volunteers
help in various ways: serving in the Sanctuary's vegetarian
cafe, and sweeping paths and public areas. Winter: From
October to Easter, most work is in the grounds and gardens
including monkey territory maintenance. Volunteers help
with building, repairing and painting territory structures,
management of wildlife friendly areas of the gardens and
maintenance of the house and grounds. Volunteers do not
work directly with the monkeys under any circumstances.
Keepers spend many months learning to recognise not only
each individual monkey but also their personalities and
the group dynamics.
Financials:
Volunteers pay £35.00* weekly towards the cost of
accommodation and food. (*£25.00 students / £15.00
unwaged)
Accommodation
and transport: Volunteers live in with the Sanctuary team,
sharing a room with other volunteers. Food is provided
and is vegetarian. We are unable to help with travel costs.
The summer holiday period is very popular, and is therefore
often fully booked months in advance.

CHINA TEACHING ENGLISH
Dongya University and Dongya School Group. Dongya University
and Dongya School Group is in fact one institution. The
institution comprises one kindergarten, one primary school,
one junior high school, one senior high school and a university.
The School Group is a unique institution in China. The
university is its apex. There are 13000 students in all,
5500 of whom are studying in the university. The institution
is located in the downtown area of the city of Qiqihar,
Heilongjiang Province, which is China's most northeastern
province. The city is the second largest city in the province
with 5.5 million population. It is a modern city. There
are some interesting local sights, such as Longsha Park
where ice sculpture and architecture are made every winter,
and Zhalong Crane Reserve, where the rare red capped crane
is found. These places attract a lot of tourists from
home and abroad.
Dongya
University and other schools in Dongya School Group are
looking for native speakers to teach Conversational English
in their schools. We have 6 positions to fill, three of
which are for the university, two of which are for the
middle schools and one for the primary school.
Job
Descriptions - For teachers on one-year contract: At the
university level, the teachers will teach Conversational
English / Business English / other courses such as reading
and writing. At junior / Senior high school level, the
teachers will teach Conversational English. At primary
school level the teachers will teach children to learn
English. For all the teachers, the teaching load will
be 20 contact (real) hours a week, 14 of which will be
spent teaching ordinary lessons, 6 of which will be spent
teaching our Conversational English Classes at weekends.
The teachers may be required to have informal conversation
with students or teachers. The maximum teaching load is
20 contact hours. During the winter and summer, the teachers
are required to teach in our winter and summer programs.
