Guatemala Sea Turtle Conservation
GUATEMALA / Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association (ARCAS)
ARCAS manages a sea turtle and mangrove conservation project near the town of Hawaii on the Pacific coast of Guatemala where volunteers assist in conducting nightly patrols of area beaches in search of nesting sea turtles, collection and burial of eggs in the hatchery and collection of research data. Volunteers can also take part in mangrove reforestations, educational activities in area schools and other community projects. The turtle season in Hawaii is from June to December with peak months of August and September for olive ridleys. For the much scarcer leatherbacks, (who, unfortunately are going extinct in the Pacific) the nesting season is November to January. For volunteers looking for a little more adventure and a more authentic Guatemalan experience, we also offer homestays with families in more remote fishing villages where volunteers help in the management and data-gathering at community hatcheries and educational and community activities.
In addition to volunteering at the Hawaii Park, ARCAS also needs volunteers to help out in managing its community sea turtle hatchery in El Rosario, a small fishing community @ 6kms east of Hawaii. There, you will be conducting nightly patrols in search of nesting adults, burying eggs in the hatchery and collecting data. The atmosphere in El Rosario is more laid back than Hawaii and there are fewer amenities, but it is also a more genuine, Guatemalan experience and a great chance to improve your Spanish.

Guatemala Wildlife Rescue And Rehabilitation
GUATEMALA / Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association (ARCAS)
Give a hand to Guatemalan wildlife! The ARCAS Wild Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is one of the premier wildlife rescue centers in the world, handling 300-600 wild animals of 40+ species per year. It is situated on 45 hectares of forested land on Lake Peten Itza across from the town of Flores in the Peten region of Guatemala, 45 kms from the world famous Mayan archeological site of Tikal. Volunteers at the Rescue Center help in feeding and caring for the animals at the center which include parrots, macaws, spider and howler monkeys, margays, ocelots, coatimundis, taras and kinkajous. Nearly all of these animals have been seized from smugglers and are very young, needing constant care and attention. There are also opportunities to take part in veterinary medical treatment, animal releases, environmental education and wildlife surveys, though the scheduling of these activities is irregular and we can't guarantee you will be able to participate.
Apart from the regular volunteer program at the Rescue Center, ARCAS is looking for volunteers to contribute to the conservation of the last @300 scarlet macaws remaining in the Maya Biosphere Reserve. This work entails nest monitoring and environmental education in the remote El Peru archaeological site in the Laguna del Tigre Park, and requires a longer time commitment and some prior experience on the part of the volunteer.

Volunteer vacancies
HONDURAS / Iguana Research and Breeding Station
The Utila Iguana (Ctenosaura bakeri) is a large, tree-dwelling black iguana. This rare endemic reptile lives in the mangroves and nests on the beaches of Utila, an island off the Caribbean north coast of Honduras.
For this reason since 1994, the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Senckenberg Nature Research Society have worked jointly to preserve this endangered reptile who lives only on the Island of Utila, the Utila Spiny-Tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura bakeri). Several other organizations, such as Honduran NGOs, joined their efforts and in 1997 they founded the Iguana Research and Breeding Station (IRBS). In 2008, the IRBS was recognized by the Honduran Government as an NGO, under the name of the Bay Islands Foundation. This allowed it to become autonomous, and the IRBS has become one of the projects of the Foundation.
Because our project has been completely self-finaced from the beginning of 2007,your volunteering and your volo-fee is an active help in environmental protection!
The jobs for the volunteers are very varied: public relations, environmental education, animal care, gardening, station maintenance and ecological research, are a few examples.
For futher information visit our web page: www.utila-iguana.de/v2
Applicants must be over 18 years old.

Teach Dance in Rio
BRAZIL / Travellers Worldwide
Teach ballet or dance to kids in Rio's poorest neighborhoods.
If you find joy in dance, join us in Rio and share your passion with kids from local shanty towns... The best thing about this project is that you can teach any kind of dance - the centre is open to anything! They mainly teach ballet, however, if you love street dance, belly dancing, Egyptian dancing...or any kind of dancing at all, they'll create a slot in the children's schedule for you to teach it. Anything goes and the kids particularly love learning new styles of dance from around the world.
You don't need any qualifications to teach dance in Brazil, just a basic understanding of the moves and enthusiasm to share this with the local kids! You can also combine your project with a dance course in the evenings, where you'll learn samba, salsa, tango, forro and other types of Brazilian and South American dance.

Teach English (EFL)
PERU /
Supporting Kids in Peru - SKIP
Created in 2003, SKIP is a non-profit organization helping economically-disadvantaged children in El Porvenir realize their right to an education. We are currently working on the north coast of Peru, in the impoverished districts that surround the city of Trujillo.
Our team is comprised of volunteers from the community of El Porvenir and Trujillo as well as volunteers from overseas.
We are currently looking for volunteers willing to teach English to primary school children. A qualification in English teaching is not required. Our English teaching coordinator will be able to provide you with guidance and advice. You will plan lessons as a team but you will be teaching classes by yourself.
Ideally people should have prior experience of working with children and an enthusiastic and energetic personality.
A level of Spanish speaking ability would be of use although not essential. However, prospective volunteers would be encouraged to learn as much Spanish as they can prior to arrival as it will enhance their volunteering experience.

Volunteer in a Nursery Programme
PERU / Supporting Kids in Peru - SKIP
Created in 2003, SKIP is a non-profit organization helping economically-disadvantaged children in El Porvenir realize their right to an education. We are currently working on the north coast of Peru, in the impoverished districts that surround the city of Trujillo.
Our team is comprised of volunteers from the community of El Porvenir and Trujillo as well as volunteers from overseas.
We have a very holistic approach to supporting the community of El Porvenir, and we offer assistance in education and economic development primarily, but we have also recently begun a nursery program. Because we want to run educational workshops with the parents, we are keen to find volunteers who have a background in education for young children. Any background in child psychology or social work would also be invaluable, as we want to talk to the parents about child development and improve their understanding of what young children need.
These children are young, so it is possible for volunteers to come who have a more limited Spanish ability as they will still be able to play with the children and can contribute to the lesson planning. However, for the training sessions we will need someone who is a relatively fluent Spanish speaker, previous experience in working in South-American countries would also be an asset, so that they are able to put across the relevant information and also answer questions that the parents have.
For more information, please visit our website at www.skipperu.org, or contact us: volunteering@skipperu.org

We are always looking for enthusiastic and innovative thinkers to help us with the Economic Development (EcoDev) Programme. The more time you are able to commit, the more you will gain from the volunteering experience. Further, the more you are able to prepare your Spanish prior to arrival, the better, as this will mean you are able to communicate with the families and gain a better understanding of their situation and how they benefit from our programme.
Volunteers involved in the EcoDev department will get to know all aspects of the programme, namely the microcredit project, the business and productive workshops as well as the marketing and distribution of products the SKIP mothers manufacture within these workshops and at home. Trip Volunteer
WORLDWIDE / Global Citizens Network
Global Citizens Network sponsors teams of volunteers wishing to learn from and work with people in other cultures. Each team visits a developing community where local people are involved in grassroots efforts to meet their human and community needs while preserving their culture and traditions.
Participants have the opportunity to experience life in another culture by living with local people, eating local foods, and experiencing local hardships and triumphs. Volunteers are instructed in language, social structure and issues, agriculture, industry, and arts. Many partner communities offer insight into specific issues or trends such as environmental protection, women in development, and traditional medicine.
Each team member receives training materials and participates in an orientation session, generally on the first or second day of the trip. The team spends one to three weeks in the community, led by a trained and experienced team leader from Global Citizens Network. A local individual acts as cultural consultant, and when necessary, as translator and language tutor.
Each day consists of both work and learning; in some locales, these elements will be divided; in others, they will occur simultaneously. Accommodations will vary, but often the team will be divided in pairs (or more) among local host families. At least one meal each day will be communal with the team and community members eating together.
The teams consist of 6-12 people. No specific skills are required of volunteers, and there are no upper age restrictions. Under-aged persons are considered on an individual basis and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
After returning home, team members are encouraged to remain engaged with Global Citizens Network. Members are encouraged to join or found a local Global Citizens Network chapter and to engage with our online community.
