Volunteer with Burmese Refugees in Chiang Mai, Thailand

THAILAND / Global Vision International

This program is based in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, strategically located a safe distance from the Burmese border and home to many head offices of NGOs, political organizations and minority groups forced to flee Burma. Refugees fleeing ethnic violence and harsh treatment from the ruling military government in Burma (or Myanmar) constantly spill over the border into neighbouring Thailand. Many will eventually make their way to Chiang Mai and other large cities to eke out a living. Volunteers on this project staff a resource centre created to provide for these displaced people, and work directly with community based organizations representing many of the fragmented ethnic and demographic groups targeted by the Burmese military regime.

Highlights

Working directly with Burmese groups who have organized themselves to become more empowered and make an impact on their own situations will prove both humbling and inspirational to many volunteers. There is ample opportunity for volunteers with skills from home to pass those on to people genuinely interested and eager to learn. Chiang Mai is a culturally rich city to explore with a wide range of options to keep you busy in your spare time.
