English Language Assistant
Hermann Lietz Schule Schloss Bieberstein
Schloss Bieberstein is a private boarding school situated near Fulda (about an hour’s drive from Fankfurt/Main). It can be found in an old castle on top of a hill, the nearest village in walking distance.
Bieberstein is home to 120 students aged between 16 and 20, who are organized in so-called “family groups” of up to 12 students. Each group is supervised by a teacher living on campus with the students. The Language Assistant is expected to participate in Bieberstein’s school life, joining one of the “families”, supporting teachers and teaching about 16 lessons a week, helping students mastering the English language and preparing them for exams.
In return, the Assistant will receive free board and lodging, internet access, access to the library and 250 € monthly allowance. The Language Assistant will be accommodated in a single room in one of the former teacher flats. Besides teaching in Bieberstein, the Language Assistant is encouraged to attend any classes he or she might be interested in, to take part in extracurricular activities and field trips at no extra costs. School terms start at the end of August, and end in July with holidays in October (2 weeks), at Christmas (2-3 weeks), in February (1 week), at Easter (2 weeks) and Pentecost (1 week). Bieberstein is a unique experience, not only for students, but also for teachers. Our website will give you an idea of life at Bieberstein: http://www.lietz-schulen.de/schulenbieberstein/bieberstein.html

Volunteers
Open Houses EV
We are looking for volunteers in our Workcamps, Building Weeks, Open House-projects and MTV-projects!
Workcamps
For the last 20 years Open Houses Network has organised international workcamps in historic monuments and buildings.
Our projects are mostly in the countryside.
For this reason we are looking for volunteers who are ready to get to know the countryside of Germany. They should be open minded, flexible and creative.
The workcamps offer the possibility to live together with people from different countries in basic conditions
The volunteers will help us to restore these historic monuments and buildings.
Often, the honorary commitment of people from other countries and cultures leads to a renewed regard by the inhabitants of the region itself for their own historic buildings, particularly in rural areas where the buildings had rarely received public attention.
Building Weeks
In contrast to the workcamps where the emphasis lies on communal life in a group of people of different nationalities and from different backgrounds and the working time is 6 hours a day, in building weeks the emphasis is on manual work and the daily working time is 8 hours. Participants here have a greater possibility of gaining real experience in restoration and other manual tasks and to broaden their knowledge.
A further aim is that those taking part should share their skills and experiences. To make the work in our building weeks as productive as possible, the volunteers should have some technical skills and it also could be advantageous if they have structural previous knowledge.
The building weeks each last for two weeks and the groups are small - up to eight people depending on the number of applications received. It is also possible to take part for a shorter time, e.g. just for one week, as we would like to offer this opportunity also to those who are tied up in professional life and have got some free time.
Open House
The “Open House” is an offer to those who have some time available, who want to escape from noise and hectic of the daily working life in the cities and search for alternatives to enrich their life.
If s/he likes new experiences and challenges, if s/he is interested in handicraft, likes to meet people of different cultures, has fantasy and a lot of nice ideas and if s/he does not mind living in very simple conditions – s/he is very welcome.
The base is the readiness for being responsible for the houses and the guests and to have engagement and motivation for the work you can do. These do not necessarily have to be handicrafts: preparing food, repairing bicycles, taking care of the guests – there are always a lot of things to do and everyone can find and take his part.
