MOZAMBIQUE / The International Voluntary Service
Friends of Quelimane is a voluntary project with the main objective of helping people from Quelimane to learn English or improve their English language skills.
The project includes a variety of activities for in different partner organisations including schools and orphanages. Each volunteer is expected to deliver English classes at each location, at different times throughout the day, to allow a wider participation. The students are mainly children/teenagers with fewer opportunities, inmates or individuals with criminal convictions and local English teachers who wish to improve their knowledge.
Where classes of basic English are already offered, the volunteers will complement the current courses with an intermediate course and perhaps an advanced course. Volunteers will also be involved in organising, coordinating, and implementing other activities, such as theatre and debates in English which will widely depend on the volunteer’s skills and interests.
In all contexts, the volunteers are expected to be able to build and implement a coherent, progressive curriculum.
Candidates should possess a TEFL certificate (or other relevant teaching qualification), a minimum of 1 year experience teaching English as a foreign language, be fluent in English, experienced in teaching with at least 3 months experience of living or travelling in a developing country. Further, candidates must be flexible and good at organising and planning workload, able to adapt to different cultural situations and willing to learn Portuguese once in post (lessons will be provided). They must also demonstrate enthusiasm for developing/testing curriculum resources and structures.
Project duration is between 3-6 months. The start date is flexible from the end of July.
